Correction and Feedback
I would implement real-life applications for the skill of solving word problems using whole numbers. I would do this activity with first graders. The focus would be on adding and subtracting whole numbers one to ten. We would go on to more difficult lessons, like solving mathematical word problems, once students could show that they were proficient at understanding the differences between each number and how to calculate it. The bare minimum of words would be used in each word problem because they are also learning to read. An example of this word type of word problem would be similar to the problem sampled below.
There were 4 .
Then 5 more came.
How many are there in all?
Initially, I would give every student a worksheet with four problems on it—two addition problems and two subtraction problems. Like the previous question, all four of the questions would be extremely basic. Subsequently, I would advise the pupils to finish answering the first question and double-check their work to ensure accurate solution. If they needed help solving the
word problem, I would let them know there was plenty of space to use, including for drawing pictures. To ensure they understand the question and what it is asking of them, I would remind them to read the question slowly. After they're finished, I'd like them to indicate whether they felt

they answered the question correctly by drawing a happy face, incorrectly, by drawing a sad face,
or unsure of the answer by drawing a question mark. I would go around my classroom checking the students' answers, just like Ms. Wong from our textbook. “Students who had the first problem
correct were given task-specific praise and directions for the rest of the problems.” (Vaughn & Bos
, 2020, p. 356) To give feedback I would say, "Excellent job! You are correct! You answered this question correctly! You used the blank space next to the question by drawing images to help in with the problem. Well done for being able to draw two circles and then add three more to make five. Please complete the final three questions. After you're done, meet with your math partner to compare your answers to see if you both came up with the same answers. Do you know what to do if your responses differ? Yes, collaborate to determine who is right.”.
For students who missed the mark I would again follow Ms. Wong’s lead. “Tell aloud how you did this. Start from the beginning, and as you think of what you’re doing, say it aloud so
I can follow.” (Vaughn & Bos
, 2020, p. 356) I will examine the pictures they drawn to help solve
the problem to see if there’s errors in their drawings that should be revised. But I have noticed that most students will catch their own mistakes once you go back over the problem and make them recall each step aloud. Students will be asked to do the next problem, again saying what is being done aloud. After completing and answering a question correctly, they will be able to move
on to the next questions. I will then continue to provide task-specific feedback and instructions for the remaining problems.
