Amy Sprague C226 Data Collection Instrument Task 1 Research Topic The research problem I have picked to study involves fifth graders and their comprehension and fluency of basic math facts, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Fifth-grade students need help fluently solving basic fact problems and answering basic fact questions. Fluency is defined as answering correctly within 3 seconds. Students also need help to apply fact strategies when solving real- world problems. These concepts align with the math Common Core standards of fifth grade. Participants The participants of this study are 2 classes of 5th-grade students, consisting of a total of 60 students. Purpose of Data Collection The goal of collecting the data is to assess where students' knowledge could be improved in 3rd-5th grade fact fluency. This will give a basis for knowing where to place students when learning fact fluency concepts.
Types of Data Collected The data collection during this action research project will use quantitative data. The students will be tested on their previous knowledge of facts and see how well they can relate them to real-world problems. This is quantitative data. The test has two parts. Part one includes 8 fact-based story problem questions related to fifth-grade concepts aligned with 5th-grade Common Core Standards. Part 2 is a fact-based placement test done online to see where their knowledge of fact fluency is. These questions align with 3rd-5th grade Common Core Standards depending on their placement. Students will take the tests as pre- & post-tests. There will also be a questionnaire given pre- and post about their enjoyment of learning facts and which strategies they know/like. This is a quantitative data collection. The pre and post-assessments and interviews will be collected using Google Forms. Fluency data will be collected from XtraMath. Data Collection Assessment Students will independently complete the assessments. Students will be informed before the test that it will not affect their grades. Grades will be based on the results, and a numeric grade out of 100 points will be given for the XtraMath portion and the pre-& post-assessments. A spreadsheet will determine how well students enjoy learning and their feelings about math. All questions are worth equal weight. The data gathered will be of a quantitative nature as the grades are numeric, and there are no open-ended questions. The survey will be qualitative as there are open-ended questions, and it is about their feelings about math. Below are the assessments and questions I will use.

Ethical Issues and Addressing Them An ethical issue that may arise within this study is related to professionalism. According to Acrobatiq (2015), issues of professionalism are an area of ethical concern that looks at the problem of research misconduct, including reporting data selectively, manipulating results to align with a theory, and failing to show data that contradicts one’s work. A second witness should watch the test and grade papers with the original researcher to avoid these issues. This will ensure that the data presented is not manipulated and is accurately represented. This will prevent the teacher from manipulating the data to show stronger results than there are. Another ethical issue within this study is the way research participants are treated. Acrobatiq (2015) describes it as an ethical concern that impacts how researchers design their studies so that physical, psychological, and emotional harm does not occur due to their research. To prevent students from harm, ensure they know that the assessment will not determine their intelligence or affect their grades. The researcher must clarify that the assessment is only to know the student's understanding
of the area so they can be supported. Clarity with students about the test's expectations and what the results will do will be key to keeping students from feeling emotionally or psychologically harmed. References 1. Acrobatiq. (2015).
