6 Knowledge Level Objectives, Grade 6-8 Science Goal: Label the parts of the body systems using a fetal pig during dissection. Objectives: Students will examine the body systems using a fetal pig. Students will identify the major organs of the specimen and name them on their worksheet. While dissecting students will discuss the function of each organ with lab partners. Goal: Understand, interpret, and summarize the concepts of the digestive and urinary systems of the fetal pig. Objectives: Students will be able to recognize, name, and explain in detail how the digestive system and urinary system of their fetal pig works (Students have no control on whether they get a male or female fetal pig to dissect). Math Goal: Explain and review decimals, place value, and number lines. Objectives: Students will be able to differentiate place values of each decimal and place them in order using a number line from least to greatest in value. Goal: Morning work displayed using PowerPoint on the smartboard that will present simple numeric expressions involving whole numbers to solve. Objectives: Students will identify and apply order of operations to simple numeric expressions to solve the expression on their morning work PowerPoint. By the end of this morning work, students will be able to show how to demonstrate the use of PEMDAS to solve simple numeric expressions using whole numbers. Social Studies Goal: Explore the Civil War and how it began. Objectives: Students will analyze the causes leading up to the Civil War and will be able to determine what the long-term effects of the war were for the states. Language Arts Goal: Read Holes by Sachar Louis. Objectives: Students will be able to comprehend the plot and complex characters during open discussions about weekly reading of this book with peers. This will allow students to analyze, make connections, and draw conclusions based off of their own point of view and their peers perspective on each chapter of the book. 6 Higher Level Objectives, Grades 9-12 Social Studies Objective: Students will be able to list major oceans and seas of the world. Objective: Students will be able to name presidents of the United States in order.
Math Objective: Students will be able to solve algebraic expressions involving radicals and polynomials. Science Objective: Students will label and properly use all parts of a microscope during lab and will complete lab reports based on understanding of how to read microscopic slides. Language Arts-Reading Objective: Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze the book Holes by identifying and applying knowledge of characters, conflict, point of view, and setting. Objective: Students will demonstrate the ability to create arguments based off informed research resources. Using learning objects in your lesson plans can benefit both the teacher and the student in my opinion. For teachers using learning objects, it will make it easier for you to evaluate what you have taught and what is still needing to be taught. For students, it informs the student as to what the lesson is purposed for and gives them an idea of what they will be expected to learn and do at the end of the lesson. Learning objectives are helpful because they can allow teachers to collaborate with one another on what needs to be taught for lesson plans and gives them creative freedom to put their own unique spin on it but ensuring that they are still meeting the same goal as other grade-level teachers. Most institutions or schools want the same things taught across grade levels due to things like state testing. Learning Objectives help with this in my opinion because they allow the state creating these tests to set out guidelines as to what their goals are for those grade level students. Then teachers can take this information and incorporate it into lesson plans that can still be fun and stimulating for different kinds of learners including kinesthetic, audio, and visual learners. I could see a potential downfall to learning objectives being the state requiring students of a certain grade level to obtain knowledge that is beyond them. I understand that all students are different and must be met where they are knowledge wise, but having something to rely back on that outlines specific goals for students can be helpful. Teachers could use these goals as a high point and develop objectives that can be used as steppingstones for students to reach their big goals. Proverbs 1:5 states, “Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.” Teachers goals are to guide students to success and help them learn in any way that they can. Using Objectives and Goals helps teachers to be able to do this. References
