RH.6-8.1 Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources.
1.
What was so significant about the year 1954? And what did it give Ruby the chance to do?
Answer: The year of 1954 was significant because
“
Bridges
was born in
1954
, the same year
as the Supreme Court’s Brown vs. Board of Education decision which outlawed segregation.”
(Ruby Bridges Biography, Life, Interesting Facts, 2018). This gave Ruby a chance to do something others before her time could not. Which was to attend an all-white school.
RH.6-8.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
2.
What does the word segregation mean in the text?
Answer: Segregation mean to keep separated. To not merge any schools, children’s, etc. The text says that a simple test could be the means of keeping the children’s away from each other and not have them both get a fair education. Basically, the white children and the black children were not ever to be in the same school system.
RH.6-8.1 Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources.
3.
Reading the text, how did Ruby’s mother feel about her going to an all-white school versus how Ruby’s dad felt? Answer: Both parents had a different viewpoint “Ruby’s father was not in favor of the test because he was concerned that if his little girl went to an all-white school, it would cause serious problems for his child. Lucille, Ruby Bridges’s mother, was adamant though. She was
of the firm belief that her daughter would be better educated at a white only school. Eventually, Bridges’s parents agreed, and Ando allowed Ruby to do the test.” (Ruby Bridges Biography, Life, Interesting Facts, 2018)

RH.6-8.7 Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with
other information in print and digital texts.
4.
The scholastic magazine described Ruby as brave on the front cover. How was she brave?
Answer: Personally, I felt that Ruby was brave for even wanting to attend an all-white school. Nevertheless, she went in to take the test with a mindset of passing so that she could attend. If she did not want to attend, she would have told her parents, or either she would have failed the test so that she could not go.
