Examine the information found at the bottom of the
topographic map of Mesa
. What is the scale of this map, and what is the contour interval?
2.
On a map with a scale of 1:6,000, a measured distance of 1 inch represents what distance in feet?
You must show your work in order to receive full credit.
3.
On a map with a scale of 1:500,000, a measured distance of 4.5 inches represents what distance in miles?
You must show your work in order to receive full credit.
4.
On a map with a scale of 1:125,000, a measured distance of 7.5 centimeters represents what distance in kilometers?
You must show your work in order to receive full credit.
Questions 5-9 refer to the following topographic map.
5.
What is the contour interval of the map (in feet)?
6.
Which lettered or named location on the map has the highest elevation and what is the estimated elevation?
7.
What is the lowest elevation Bunker River could be?
8.
Is it possible to see point D from point F? Explain.
9.
How deep is the depression on the map (from the lip of the depression to its bottom)?
10.
1) The Scale of the map of Mesa is 1: 100,000; this means that every 1 Centimeter on the map shows 1 Kilometer on the actual ground. The
contour of the same map is 20 Meters.
2) On a scale of 1: 6,000, where 1= 1 Inch and 6,000=? Feet
(6,000 x 1)/12 inches/foot= 500/12 inches/foot = 41 feet
1 Inch (map) = 41 Feet (actual)
3) On a scale of 1: 500,000, where 4.5 Inches =? Miles
(500,000 x 4.5)/63,360 feet/mile= 2,250,000/63,360 feet/mile = 35.5 miles
4.5 Inches (map) = 35.5 Miles (actual)
4) On a scale of 1:125,000, where 7.5 Centimeters =? Kilometers
(125,000 x 7.5)/100,000 centimeters/kilometers= 937,500/100,000 centimeters/kilometers = 9.37 kilometers
7.5 Centimeters (map) = 9.37 Kilometers (actual)
5) Contour Interval in feet is (7500-5000)/5= 2500/5 = 500 feet
6) The highest location is point D, above 7500 feet and below 8000 feet.
7) The lowest elevation of Bunker River could be less than 2,500 feet but not less than 2,000 feet.
8) Yes, one would be able to see point D from point F due to the elevation
of point D being above 7500 feet, where point F lies between 2500 feet and 3000 feet.
9) The depression is marked by the hachured contour lines. The outside lip lies even with the contour line of 5000 feet, and the bottom hachured line
is even with the following contour line of 4500 feet.
