The research study I chose is “A Social Identity Perspective of Social Medias Impact on Satisfaction of Life”. The research study is about the influences that social media can have on individuals in a psychological aspect and the impact social media has on the inviduals satisfaction with life (SwL). The study researched specific disadvantages due to the increasing dependency on social media which is becoming a social media addiction and the overall impact these disadvantages have on an individual’s satisfaction with life. (Dutot, 2020). This studies research question is – “do social media addiction, FoMO and narcissism influence an individual's
satisfaction with life?” (Dutot, 2020). The researchers are trying to answer the studies research question mentioned above. The researchers are trying to achieve an understanding of the impacts of social media on individuals by researching the specific impacts of social media on individuals like social media addiction, fear of missing out, narcissism, narcissism on satisfaction with life and what role self-esteems plays in the relations of those impacts (Dutot, 2020). The purpose of this study is to find out if social media, or social media addiction, fear of missing out (FOMO) and narcissism really do influence an individual’s satisfaction of life. Another purpose of this research study is that it contributes to the field of research by looking more deeply into the factors that impact an individual’s satisfaction with life (Dutot, 2020).
A link of this study was shared online to 265 people and 260 people participated. The study was made of both men and women of various ages, demographics of the respondents were skewed lightly as more males participated verse females that participated (Dutot, 2020). There was 136 male respondents and 124 female respondents, the ages of respondents were between 19-50 years old. Most of the respondents were primarily between 26 and 35 years old (43.1%), followed by 36–49 years old (30.8%), and 19–25 years old (18.4%) (Dutot, 2020).

As I stated above the research question in this study is “do social media addiction, FoMO
and narcissism influence an individual's satisfaction with life?” (Dutot, 2020). More research questions also were formed around the topics of collective self-esteem, individual self-esteem, addiction, and narcissism (Dutot, 2020). The research methods used were an empirical study and an online survey method. The survey was used to measure the network of relations. They used these methods because a survey is currently accepted and considered an important tool in research, these research methods are much faster, cost-effective, and straightforward and lastly the period of collection can be reduced, and instructions can be added if necessary (Dutot, 2020).
The researchers tested their hypotheses by using SmartPLS 3.0 (Dutot, 2020). According to the text “using the direction, strength and level of significance of the path coefficient (

's), the test of the research model shows that 7 of 10 hypotheses are accepted...” (Dutot, 2020). The research model explains a significant part of SwL aka satisfaction with life, (

: 38.1%), supporting the model and hypotheses (Dutot, 2020). Researchers conducted a pretest of the survey, they administered the study to ten randomly selected social media professionals, after correcting spelling and other errors they launched the actual survey to test the hypotheses. They collected the data using a “renowned” research tool called Sphinx-Campus, which again, effectively allowed researchers to save time and money (Dutot, 2020). Data was collected over a
period of five weeks and collected from participants using different social media platforms (Dutot, 2020).
“The results of a quantitative survey (n = 260) show the salient impact of these aspects on
self‐esteem as well as the preponderant role of collective self‐esteem in SwL” (Dutot, 2020). When it came to the inhibitors of self-esteem, the results were consistent with the researcher’s expectations and first hypothesis, the findings also confirmed the negative role of FoMo (Fear Of

Another major outcome of the study included addiction and narcissism, showing that for both, only collective self-esteem was influenced, instead of collective and individual self-esteem (Dutot, 2020). One of the outcomes of the study that I found interesting was the results showed that each gender acts in a separate manner when discussing addiction and dependence on social media (Dutot, 2020). “It is important to mention that the findings show great support to our model (

reveal (a) the importance of CSES on both SSES and SwL and (b) the roles of FoMO, narcissism
and addiction on self‐esteem (Dutot, 2020). Another major outcome was that the results offer an additional concept, showing that FoMO has a stronger influence on women's self‐esteem, while men are more dissatisfied with their live (Dutot, 2020). Overall, the researcher’s expectations and hypotheses were not rejected completely, the results supported their expectations for the most part. When it came to addiction and narcissism, one hypothesis out two were correct for both (Dutot, 2020). According to the researchers the first
hypotheses were not rejected, for some aspects the second hypotheses showed to be rejected. What is concluded in the above is that the results of the quantitative survey show the influencing importance of the three factors (Addiction, FoMo, Narcissism) and the role collective
self‐esteem plays when it comes to SwL (Satisfaction with Life) (Dutot, 2020). The findings also
conclude that there are real differences when it comes to gender and age of the respondents (Dutot, 2020). In conclusion, social media impacts self-esteem, as well as the three factors named above and links to an overall influence on SwL (Dutot, 2020). I feel the findings of this study were valid. The results/findings are valid because I think the methodology done in the research and data collection was thorough. They assessed the research models’ validity using PCA (Principle Component Analysis) which examines

reliability, convergent validity and discriminant validity, thus measuring and validating the internal consistency of the measures (Dutot, 2020). “The reliability and convergent validity of the constructs are typically satisfied by retaining variables with

's that exceed the recommended
value of.7, which exceed the value of.7 for the composite reliability (Hair et al., [46]) and which exceed.5 for the average variance extracted (AVE; Fornell & Larcker, [39]; Gefen et al., [41]).” (Dutot, 2020). Because the research model was examined and analyzed for validity and reliability, I think it provides that the studies findings are valid. The study had more contributions then limitations at the end which again shows the findings are valid.
