Algebra Case Study Assignment Lakia Pinckney School of Education, Liberty University EDSP 413-B01: Inclusion and Diversity: Effective Practices and Strategies Mary Kimball October 3, 2022
Algebra Case Study Assignment Level A: Case 1 Read the Scenario for the Case Task 1: Read General Guidelines for Teaching Algebra provided at the beginning of this case study. Task 2: Read the STAR Sheets for each possible strategy listed above. Task 3: Summarize the components of each strategy. Be sure to include how each strategy will support Sam and the benefits of using each strategy. General Guidelines for Teaching Algebra Strategy Summary of the Components of the Strategy How the strategy will support Sam Explicitly Teaching Vocabulary Requires the teacher to directly teach the pronunciation and definitions of new vocabulary words and to provide examples of problem types. This will help Sam by gaining the ability to solve word problems. Avoiding memory gaps, guided practice of the vocabulary words being used in journaling. Concrete- Representational- Abstract Method A method where students learn the concept of a mathematical problem before memorizing them. This will help Sam by learning the concept rather than relying solely on memory. Graphic Organizers Visuals that assist students with remembering knowledge they have already learned it. This will help Sam by providing him with visual reminders of what he has already achieved.
Level A: Case 2 Read the Scenario for the Case Task 1: Read General Guidelines for Teaching Algebra provided at the beginning of this case study. Task 2: Read the STAR Sheets for each possible strategy listed above. Task 3: Summarize the components of each strategy. Be sure to include how each strategy will support Sheldon and the benefits of using each strategy. General Guidelines for Teaching Algebra Strategy Summary of the Components of the Strategy How the strategy will support Sheldon Explicitly Teaching Vocabulary Requires the teacher to directly teach the pronunciation and definitions of new vocabulary words and to provide examples of problem types. This will help Sheldon by teaching him through examples of problem solving. Graphic Organizers Visuals that assist students with remembering knowledge they have already learned it. This will help Sheldon with being organized with his work and to remember what he has already done. Task 4: Using one or more of these strategies, describe an activity that could be used to assist Sheldon.

Begin responding to task 4 here. Make sure that your answers are written in complete sentences and that you fully answer/describe each part of the question in detail. Level A: Case 3 Read the Scenario for the Case Task 1: Read General Guidelines for Teaching Algebra provided at the beginning of this case study. Task 2: Read the STAR Sheet for the strategy listed above. Task 3: Summarize the components of the strategy. Be sure to include how the strategy will support Tyisha and the benefits of using the strategy. General Guidelines for Teaching Algebra Strategy Summary of the Components of the Strategy How the strategy will support Tyisha Mnemonic Devices To help students to learn content through pictorial devices, words, and sentences. This will help Tyisha with her difficulty with word problems by allowing her to learn the content of the problem.
Level B: Case 1 Read the Scenario for the Case Task 1: Read the STAR Sheets for the four strategies listed above. Task 2: For each goal, identify a strategy and explain how and why it will assist Maria in reaching her goals. Goal Strategy and how it will support Maria 1. Solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems involving integers (e.g., 4 + 6; 4 + -6; 4 x 5; -18 ÷ -3) Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) Method This will help Maria by writing out the problem and using manipulatives to help with the equation and solving the algebra problem. 2. Solve expressions with variables (e.g., 3x = -24) Mnemonic devices This will help Maria by writing out the equation and separating each tile and using algebra manipulatives. 3. Simplify addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division equations (e.g., (2x + 6) + (4x + 7) = 6x + 13) Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) Method This will help Maria by breaking down the problem and allowing her to see the whole structure of the equation while the teacher observes her work. 4. Solve two-step equations (e.g., 3x - 4 = 2) Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) Method This will help Maria with guided practice of solving two-step equations. 5. Solve multi-step equations (e.g., 5x - 4 = 2x + 5) Mnemonic devices This will help Maria by allowing her to solve the problem from using the word and sentences of the equation to help with the concept of the problem, 6. Write and solve the algebra Explicit instruction
equation in a real-life word problem This will help Maria by having word problems that are related to experiences she would encounter in real life. Giving her time to practice critical thinking skills.

Level B: Case 2 Read the Scenario for the Case Task 1: Read the STAR Sheets for the three strategies listed above. Task 2: Explain how and why each strategy could assist José in reaching his goals. Strategy How the strategy will support Sam in Reaching his Goals Teaching Vocabulary Explicit instruction This will help Sam by providing support from his teacher when learning new vocabulary and by modeling what needs to be learned. Graphic Organizers Graphic organizers This will help Sam by allowing him to see the relationships between ideas of knowledge that he has already learned. It will allow him to stay organized. Mnemonic Devices Mnemonic devices This can help Sam by assisting him retain new information for the lesson. Task 3: Explain how you would involve José’s parents and develop an activity from one of the strategies that José’s parents could use at home. Begin responding to task 3 here. Make sure that your answers are written in complete sentences and that you fully answer/explain each part of the question in detail.
Level C: Case 1 Read the Scenario for the Case Task 1: Develop three to four goals for Martha. Goal 1: To retain information from group activities to use in independent work. Goal 2: To learn to memorize the concept of an equation Goal 3: To learn new vocabulary terms Task 2: Using the Algebra STAR Sheets, select a strategy for each goal, and explain the benefit of using the strategy to address the corresponding goal. Goal Selected Strategy How the Strategy will Assist Martha in Achieving the Goal To retain information from group activities to use in independent work. Mnemonic devices This will help Martha to retain the information for when she is attempting to do work on her own and get it right. To learn to memorize the concept of an equation. Concrete-Representational- Abstract (CRA) Method This will help Martha to learn to remember the basis of an equation. To learn new vocabulary terms Explicit instruction This will help Martha to solve word problems on her own by understanding the language of the problem off how it worded.
Task 3: Select one goal and describe an independent practice activity that will assist Martha in achieving that goal. An independent practice that will help Martha will be a pre-teaching vocabulary assignment. The teacher can provide a lesson where she can have the vocabulary words where Martha can use them in complete sentences. The teacher can also provide a guided practice worksheet fill in the blank. A journaling activity can also help with learning the vocabulary.
