This week in class I learned how to use cooperative learning in the classroom. I think this
will be very beneficial to me in future career as a teacher. Since I will be teaching math, I am positive I will use cooperative learning in my classroom. Math can be a very difficult subject for some students so cooperative learning would allow students to teach other students, and maybe show them a different perspective to help them understand the material. With math there are so many different ways to learn the same thing, so I think this would be very beneficial for my students. We also learned this week how to break boredom in the classroom. I will surely use many of these techniques in my classroom because I do not want my students getting bored. I plan to use some humor in my classroom because this will be a great way to keep my students engaged. I would also like to rearrange my classroom so it is not the same every week. This will help my students make new friends and build relationships with their peers which is a great life skill to have.
When doing group work in math, I will have to be very attentive to my students, and make sure they know that cheating is strongly discouraged. Math is a subject where it is very easy for a student to copy work without the teacher ever knowing. I will be sure to go around each group and ask questions to each group member so that they can demonstrate that they understand the material. I think group work can be very beneficial if done correctly. On the flip side, I also think that if it is not done correctly then it can be a major problem for some students.
Another topic that was intriguing to me this week was the use of technology in the classroom. I think technology can be very useful in the classroom if it used correctly. I think it can be a huge distraction to students if it is not monitored properly. From personal experience, I have seen where students just use their technology device as a video game, and do nothing but play video games and use social media. I would like to find out a better way to monitor technology. I know this is very hard to do, but I think technology could be a beneficial tool if it is
used correctly. Lastly, I want to use inquiry based learning in my classroom. I think starting out class with a problem to overcome would be a great way to keep students motivated. This would also be a great way to break boredom. However, sometimes I think this would be hard to relate back to the material I am teaching. For instance if I am teaching how to factor polynomials it might be hard to ask an inquiry question. On these days I would just most likely use a different instructional strategy.
