Name: Field Experience: Applying the Six Rules of Thumb for Giving Feedback
Directions: If you are already teaching in a classroom, complete the assignment below about your own class. If you are not yet teaching in a classroom, observe another teacher and complete the assignment below.
During a given week, provide feedback to (or observe feedback given to) five students as
they move through learning tasks. Record the feedback given to students and explain how it follows the Six Rules of Thumb.

How it Follows the Six Rules of
Thumb

A student received a good
report note sent to parents for having neat handwriting during a writing assignment.
This provided feedback to recognize good performance.
2
While grading a worksheet, I wrote a note reminding student to make sure they use complete sentences that include correct punctuation, capitalization, and spelling, while giving an example.
This described how students could improve by using rich descriptions

While walking around the room during a math worksheet, I stopped and spoke with a student about how she had done several math problems correctly by taking her time. This can tie in how well instead of how rapidly, and provides feedback without personalization. A student got to hang a This provided feedback to

During a math facts game, students were trying to quickly guess the
correct answer instead of working the problem out. One student was taking his time and getting the correct answers. He received a note home explaining what a great job he did by taking his time. This shows how well the student did instead of how rapidly he worked. In the chart below, provide one non-example
of feedback that follows the Six Rules of Thumb. This may be an example of feedback you provided, or it may have been observed. Please explain why this example does not follow the Six Rules of Thumb.

A student was praised for how many math questions
were answered in a timed test before grading. This student answered many incorrectly. This was praising quantity over quality and praising how rapidly they worked over how well they did. Students should receive feedback that praises quality over quantity as well as how well they did instead of how quickly they
worked. In the space below, please identify ways you plan to recognize student work.
Five Ways You Would Recognize Student Work:
1. I will send home notes to parents about something they did well several times a week. 2. I will give examples and explanations on how a student can improve their work. 3. I will have a wall of fame for students to share work they are proud of.
4. I will write my students notes thanking them for their good performance.
5. I will praise students who work hard and show quality work over the quantity of work.
