Explain which of the 6 green headings resonates with you the most
on your current journey to becoming a math educator.
Persistence best describes my journey when it comes to being a math educator.
How is this characteristic evident in you already?
I feel as though this characteristic is evident in me already because math has been a struggle for me from about freshman year on but I always have a smile on and a positive attitude to push through and figure it out. I have subbed in in grade Pre-K through Fifth and I will say the first time I had to teach a fifth-grade math lesson I was a nervous wreck. I was persistent, read through the plans, teacher manual, and talked with the other fifth grade teacher while our classes were at specials and when they came back, we pushed right along through that math lesson, and I enjoyed it. Finding various strategies that work for students and myself is beneficial as well. The math class I took a few sessions ago was tricky for me, but I studied and studied and got the help I needed to better understand the parts I kept
getting stuck on and it began to make more sense.
Where do you fall short?
I feel as though I fall short when it comes to more algebraic thinking and the multi-step problems done in higher grades. I tend to over think the steps and think I am doing it wrong and then I shut down when if I would have a little bit more confidence in myself
when it comes to working through those harder math equations I may do better.
How do you plan to grow in this area?
Asking for help is one way I plan to grow in this area. You can always learn more. Being open-minded and having self-confidence when it comes to math is something I need to do better with on a consistent basis versus saying oh yeah, I can’t do that that is too hard.
Why is it important? Persistence is important because it teaches our students to keep going when it gets tough. It is one way to show them that when they continue to try, make a mistake, try again, etc. they will eventually get it. Our brains all work at different paces and understand things differently and that is okay. It is important for our students to be persistent in their learning and confident in their capabilities.
