Launch, Explore, Summarize The article provided was very informative and I was able to make some connections regarding the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum that DMPS uses. The IM workbook and teacher resource guide follow the three-phase problem-solving based method and I find it beneficial for students to go through their math lessons in this way.
In the Launch section of this approach, it is looked at as the beginning or introduction to the lesson aside from the warm-up is how I took it. The teacher uses a guided approach and activates prior knowledge and or expand on some knowledge before diving into the main part of the lesson. In the section you don’t want to give away too much as we want our students to think and be problem solvers with how and what they are given.
In the
Explore section of the article it discusses how the students explore various skills and ways to solve problems they are given. The students are in more of a student-based approach is how I take it here as they put their knowledge to work and begin to use their deeper thinking. The teacher will be there to assist and guide thinking and learning for our students during this time and providing enough time for the child to tackle the problem and have thinking and processing time. The students are working together and or independently but with the experience I have students use this time to collaborate with math partners or table
groups as they work through some of the problems provided and explore what and how they can successfully solve the problems.
In the Summarize section the students will come together with the teacher, and they will engage in discussion as the teacher brings the students back together. Here they will be exposed to various strategies and listen to peers share out how they solved the problem, why
they did it the way they chose, and explain their thinking. The teacher will select a few students
to share out and create purposeful and collaborative group discussions during this part.
