About the Math 1. What strategy did you already know? One strategy that I was already familiar with was addition with number charts. I use this strategy daily with students that I work with. I liked how the male in the video showed a few ways students can add using the number chart versus just counting by ones. So, using various strategies with the number chart tool can assist our students. Another one I like and am very familiar with is adding or subtracting with a number line as well. This one in my opinion is a great visual tool for students to use to draw the jumps. Yes, they can do so on each, but the number line may be easier for some to process than a number chart. 2. What was a new way of thinking? The video that was a new way of thinking for me was how he used partial sums in the fourth video. I have seen this strategy used for various problems, but it is not the first way to solve the problem that my rain jumps too. 3. How can you apply this new thinking when working with students? I can apply all the thinking done and notes taken on each video and use them to assist me in supporting my students that I work with each day. I feel like these videos would be good for all teachers to use and show students various ways to solve problems and have them watch and walk through as he or she models them. One of the four strategies in the video could be a way we get that one student who is struggling to finally understand or comprehend what we’re working with and doing. Preferred Resources tab: 4. What do you notice about all the tasks listed I noticed how they offer a variety of ideas under this tab and how educators could use this to scaffold a preferred task and even extend a preferred task in a lesson in a content area. Schools today have a focus on rigor and utilizing the resources provided is one way to assist them in doing so. Additional Resources 5. How might you use the Graham Cracker 3-Act Task with students? You could use this in a few different ways within the classroom for different math standards and grade levels. You could use them to teach estimating, quantity, how the graham crackers break up into four pieces and so on. Referring to the videos students could make different estimates about the product. I was thinking of many other ways you could use the graham crackers for math purpose’s too.
