Evalua&ng Technology Tools for Primary Math Assistance Robbie Lucas Teachers College, WGU Learning Technology – D294 Chris Levy, Instructor January 19, 2024
Evalua&ng Technology Tools for Primary Math Assistance Learning Goal: Students will be able to increase math scores overall in the primary grade levels, grades 2-4 are the target range. Students will demonstrate understanding by earning higher math scores overall on future assessments at the district and state level. Learning Tool #1: Moby Max “MobyMax is a standards-aligned K–8 learning plaQorm for math, literacy, science, and social studies equipped with adapSve tests, test-prep lessons, interacSve whiteboard acSviSes, and moSvaSonal tools. MobyMax also features specific state test-prep acSviSes.” ( MobyMax review for teachers ) A: Moby Max is an online tool where students are monitored for skill growth and learning velocity. It is useful for test prep and provides whiteboard acSviSes as well as moSvaSonal tools for several subjects. B: Because of the placement test and individualized monitors, Moby Max insSlls deeper learning in its users as well. Students are quizzed based on their past knowledge making a deeper learning possible. A]er an iniSal adapSve test, the tool will assign a sequence of lessons to fill in any gaps in a learner’s knowledge. C: The online assessments in Moby Max are all read aloud which can be helpful for some learners making this tool accommodaSve to many types of learners and styles. There is a zoom feature as well and the ability to go at one’s own speed is all helpful in making this tool usable to many different learning styles.
D: Moby Max can be embedded into an LMS and can be used with a single sign-on system (SSO). This is not full LMS integraSon, but it can be embedded into the use of an LMS plaQorm of any kind (MobyMax review for teachers). Learning Tool #2: Dreambox Learning “DreamBox Learning Math is an adapSve and self-paced math program that provides interacSve pracSce acSviSes. It’s available for both web-based and iPad plaQorms, and student progress is tracked across both. It creates a personalized pathway for students based on their demonstrated level of readiness and adapts this pathway as students learn.” ( Dreambox Learning Math Review for Teachers) A: Dream Box allows students to go through at their own pace and has voice-guided walk-throughs for any missed quesSons. This scaffolding helps students achieve higher learning because each quesSon is explained correctly. This is an adapSve and self-paced plaQorm that contains self-paced pracSce acSviSes. Lessons look like games and acSviSes that make learning fun. This will help keep students’ adenSon and hopefully make them want to stay longer learning on this app. B: The scaffolding and voice training review gives this app or web-based tool a level of deeper learning. Students sSll input their answers to the quesSon a]er a mistake is made through the online review guide. Even through the review of a missed quesSon, the learner is pufng the correct answer in its place. This conSnues the learning deeply.

C: This is helpful as an adapSve learning tool that can accommodate learning differences. Learners progress through at their own pace and receive the needed instrucSon that differs for each student. D: This tool does not seem to integrate into an LMS as well as the other two discussed. It could be linked into a learning management system as a URL link but this does not seem to integrate other than this link posSng (Dreambox Learning Math Review for Teachers). Learning Tool #3: Zearn “Zearn is an online math curriculum for grades one through eight with supplemental skills pracSce acSviSes for kindergarteners. Students open up to a dashboard with tasks to be completed; these include a variety of fluency warm-ups that promote general number sense and lesson-specific skills, as well as guided pracSce with interacSve video lessons that feature diverse and enthusiasSc human teachers and school-age children.” ( Zearn review for teachers .) A: As students progress through the main game play they are coached on the problems that they miss. Students then use the coached scaffolding to place the correct answer on their own besides being shown the correct answer. B: This shows deeper learning by requiring the learner to sSll input the correct answer even with the coaching present. Students are likely to be more engaged as similar students, “The Zearn Squad,” are with them along the way in the tool. Engagement can help with deeper learning as the students will stay with the tool longer because it can be fun.
C: Zearn supports personalized learning by providing scaffolding and reinforcement of skills. Students can progress through each lesson at their own pace. It is structured in a fun way so that the learner can enjoy an individualized experience at their own pace. D: This tool could integrate into a learning management system through a link to the Zearn system. It can be embedded into an LMS system this way (Zearn review for teachers). Recommenda@on: It would be my recommendaSon to use the Zearn tool. It integrates beder into an LMS than the other opSons. Zearn is more friendly to primary grades from what I can tell also. I liked its scaffolding plaQorm and its error correcSon to be a beder opSon. The way it visually shows the learner the mistake and then has them correct it is important for deeper learning and accommodaSng to all types of learners. Zearn did not have a difficult pretest like Moby Max. I would fear that a pretest as heavy as the one in Moby Max would steer learners against the fun of learning with tools similar to these. The cost of using the DreamBox tools seems to be a major factor in my decision against it. I was not able to preview nearly as many details to the DreamBox system for free as I was able to for the other tools. Zearn seems like the one to go with a]er reviewing these three opSons.
