Effective Use Of Assessment Strategies: Grade 2 By: Amber Reynoso
NYS Science Standard: 2-PS1-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties. Color, texture, hardness, and flexibility are possible observations. Patterns could be the comparable qualities that various materials have in common.] (Science Learning Standards, n.d.)
Formative & Summative Assessments Formative: Tools that detect misconceptions, difficulties, and learning gaps along the way and evaluate how to bridge such gaps are referred to as formative assessment tools. When students realize that the objective is to enhance learning rather than assign grades, it can even strengthen their capacity to take responsibility for their education. It contains useful tools for assisting in the shaping of learning.(Formative and Summative Assessments, Summative Assessment: Summative tests, on the other hand, measure students' success, knowledge, and learning at the end of a unit, course, or program of instruction. Summative evaluations are frequently heavily weighted and almost usually explicitly evaluated, but they are not required to be. (Formative and Summative Assessments, 2021)

Learning Activities to Encourage A Positive Attitude: Why are our toys made of plastic? Could you build a house made of paper? Can you fry an egg on the sidewalk?
Why Are Our Toys Made of Plastic? Students will study about melting, the solid and liquid phases of materials, and the history of plastic's invention in this lesson. As part of the Candy Melt activity, students investigate which kinds of candy melt in hot water. They make a decision about which candy is appropriate to bring to a hot summer camp based on their observations.
Could You Build A House Made of Paper? Students study the assembly of major structures, such as houses, from smaller components in this lesson. In the Paper Towers exercise, participants use paper, an unusual building material, to create their own structures! Using paper clips and 3" x 5" index cards, students construct towers. They are tasked with building towers that are sturdy enough to hold a hardback book after first building lofty buildings.

Can You Fry An Egg On The Sidewalk? Students examine the conducting and insulating qualities of various materials in this lesson. Students try various materials to discover which would make the greatest oven mitts in the Feel the Heat exercise.
Questioning Strategies For Formative Assessments: 1. Have students group different objects based on their characteristics. 2. Observations Worksheet: file:///Users/amberreynoso/Downloads/g2-l1.1- sas%20(1).pdf 3. Q and A
Assessment Activity: Survivor 2-PS-1: You are stranded on an Island in the desert, make a shelter and design your boat using the materials found in the following steps ! Classify the different materials. Design tests for the different properties. (suitability of shelter/ boat design. Collect data + draw a table.) Decide the purpose for each material. (data analysis can be used to support choices.) Draw and label a model of your shelter. Present design and explain the relationship between property of material and its intended purpose.
