Mid-Winter Project Reflection 2024-02-22 1 Individual: Mid-Winter Project Reflection Individuals must complete and submit this template based on your experience in the Winter Project . This needs to be done individually and should reflect your own personal observations and understanding. This assignment is worth a total of 12/24 of your Design Process Marks earned in the Winter project (i.e. 12/40 total design marks earned over the course of the year) and 9/9 of your Teamwork Reflection Marks earned in the Winter project (9/62 total teamwork marks earned over the course of the year). Remember to: 1. Put your answers directly in this document; 2. Save as PDF; 3. Submit to both Gradescope (mapping the correct pages to each question) and to the OWL assignment where Turnitin will be used to check for plagiarism and AI detection. Failure to upload to both sites by the deadline will result in an additional 10% penalty; and 4. Submit on time or late penalties will be applied up to 24 hours after the due date. Any requests for submissions after 24 hours past the due date will not be considered without academic consideration.
Mid-Winter Project Reflection 2024-02-22 2 1 Design Process [12] Ideation Capabilities a) Present, graphically , with annotations , four personally generated and distinct concepts for solutions to your project challenge (these solutions can be at the system level or for a particular module or component level). Refer to your project records to assist you in answering this question. [8] b) Describe and critique the process or sources of inspiration you used to generate one of the concepts included in part a). This could include inspiration from client meetings, research, brainstorming sessions, reframed problem, why-why analysis, etc.. Note: The purpose of the critique is for you to consider the repeatability of your ideation approach for future design challenges you are faced with. [4] A . (Zoom into images [If needed] to read annotations) B. The concept is my last image of the user using physical indicators to navigate the wall. Inspiration came from client meetings and group brainstorming sessions. In the meetings, our client emphasized the importance of climbing independently because it directly results in a positive climbing experience. It was also mentioned that our solution would be more attractive if it minimized the use of technology. We decided that our targeted client had tunnel vision blindness and could benefit by utilizing their other four senses. With this new knowledge, we eliminated concepts that required third-party help and concepts like noise-making holds that would both use a lot of technology and would distract our users more than aid them. I then developed the concept of a wall that utilizes our user’s sense of touch by having physical indicators surrounding each hold. The hold is directly in the center of the indicators which our user can feel and find their way to the hold. This ultimately allows them to climb independently using their sense of touch without the use of technology. Critiquing this ideation approach, our process mapped out a clear goal to reach [independently climbing] along with factors to keep in mind [minimal tech, etc]. It allowed our group to eliminate previous concepts [sound holds] while ideating some of our own. Our process involved research and directly speaking with our client to understand their wants, needs, and values which provided an outline for our concepts. This process is repeatable for other design challenges.
Mid-Winter Project Reflection 2024-02-22 3 2 Teamwork Reflection Ability to self-assess limitations [6] Identify and describe one important skill/capability you individually lack or need to improve that is important to the success of the project and your career. Please note that this skill/capability can be either technical or non-technical in nature. To keep your answer to this question concise and on topic, provide your answer in the following format: a) Why this skill/capability is important (to the project and your career)? [3] b) How you know you need to develop this skill/capability? [2] c) What concrete initial step(s) you plan to take to try and develop this skill/capability? [1] One important skill/capability that I need to improve on during this project is seeking clarification when I am unsure of the information that I have received. Specifically for our project, seeking clarification in our client meetings gives us a firm and clear understanding of what our client is looking for and provides us with more important information about them such as any current issues they may have, specific requests about our concept [minimal use of technology] and more. This is important because it creates a blueprint with objectives and constraints that our group can now utilize to create the best-fit solution. Another example is clarifying with group members on which concept to use as our baseline in our Pugh matrix. From this, we are better able to individually evaluate each of the other concepts and see how they compare to our chosen baseline. This prevents any possible errors or misunderstandings within our design process as all members are in agreement and clearly understand how to execute the individual tasks we are assigned. In an engineering-related career, seeking clarification is a crucial part of maintaining accuracy in real-world designs. The designs I may be working on could be public structures and motorized vehicles that carry heavy consequences if not designed correctly. Clarity allows for professionalism and precision, and failure to keep either could result in huge costs, safety hazards, and setbacks for projects. I knew I needed to develop my capability when I was filling in our risks table. I was challenged and unclear with ranking the severity and detectability columns as I was filling in the table. Rather than seeking clarification, I assumed my rankings were correct, and was later corrected by the TA. Steps I plan on taking to further develop my capability of asking for clarification is to start asking for clarification daily. It could be in my residence building with my roommates, in my design lab, or calculus lecture. As long as I consistently ask questions when I am unsure, I will develop a habit of always doing it and will master this skill.

Mid-Winter Project Reflection 2024-02-22 4 3 Teamwork Reflection Team Charter [3] Consider the following scenario: One of your team members starts to become disengaged and defaults to contributing the bare minimum in meetings, amount of work and quality of work. a) Clearly state if you think your current team charter addresses this scenario. [0.5] b) Defend your position by providing evidence (“quotes”) from your team charter and explain ing how these quotes show your charter addresses the scenario or how they show something is missing from your charter in order for it to be useful in addressing the proposed scenario. [2.5] Our current team charter addresses this scenario. Our team charter clearly outlines the quality of work we expect from our team, how we divide our tasks among members, how we establish deadlines, and communication outside of class. Our team values quality work and “strives to exceed expectations 80s- 90s range.” This displays our group expects high -quality work that goes above and beyond what is being asked of us. We expect high grades, and this cannot be achieved by accepting the bare minimum work from any of our members including myself. When actively working, tasks are assigned to those who have previous experience related to that task to ensure we have our most capable group members completing them. Other members are separated into smaller groups with each of us helping one another. Clearly written in our team charter our division of tasks is done by “prioritizing skills/experience, and splitting members into sub- groups.” Tasks are either completed b y members who have previous experience with said task or by multiple members collaborating. Another aspect of our team charter that addresses this scenario is how we establish our deadlines. Before a deadline, we “review our assignments together, with week ly updates with each other to hold us accountable.” Our weekly updates include the work we have completed in our previous lab and everyone is held accountable for their individual work which is then reviewed by all of us to ensure it is the best we can submit. Lastly, our communication within our group plays a vital role in ensuring no members become disengaged. In our team group chat we always reach out “before class / near important deadlines / when needed – status updates, requesting help, etc.” Everyone is always being updated on the status of each other's work, and there is no need to contribute the bare minimum work when you can always request help from fellow team members. Our expectation of quality, division of tasks, attention to deadlines, and team communication outside class all demonstrate how equipped our team is to combat this scenario as proven in our team charter.
