Reflective Learning Journal - Evaluating My Leadership Credibility as an Initiative Manager Introduction – As an initiative manager, assessing my own leadership credibility is essential for understanding how effectively I can influence and lead others within my area. Which I have not done before, so I think it will be good exercise to examine my strengths of leadership credibility. 1. How strong is your own leadership credibility? What makes you think so? Improving self-awareness is crucial for understanding both strengths and areas needing improvement. To be candid, I acknowledge that I have much to learn and must exert effort to enhance my leadership skills. Regarding credibility, I believe I am performing adequately based on feedback received from past and ongoing initiatives, yet I realize the need for continued growth. For instance, when I assumed responsibility for a current initiative, it lacked structure and was on the verge of failure. However, after implementing a tracking process and fostering buy-in from over 120 team members, we successfully improved project health. Effective communication, problem-solving workshops, and highlighting strategic significance were pivotal in this success. Consistently demonstrating progress (Demo culture) to stakeholders, despite initial resistance, helped them understand the initiative's value and reduced rework. Additionally, by prioritizing relationship-building, such as regular check-ins and addressing team concerns, collaboration improved noticeably. However, I recognize the need to improve my communication with the leadership team, especially in providing detailed updates on initiative health instead of merely delivering high- level summaries. In evaluating my leadership credibility as an initiative manager, I am committed to enhancing self-awareness, maintaining consistency, and further developing relationships. By identifying areas for growth and taking proactive measures, I aim to strengthen my leadership effectiveness and credibility within the organization. 2. If you were to ask a trusted colleague what the single most important thing you could do to improve your credibility might be, what do you think they'd say? Why do you think they would say that? I think it will be communication, because most of the times I presume that they (audience, team members) know what I am saying.
If I were to seek advice from a trusted colleague on the most critical aspect to enhance my credibility, I believe they might suggest improving consistency in communication and follow- through. This is because consistent communication ensures clarity and transparency, while reliable follow-through demonstrates commitment and reliability. In my role as an initiative manager, maintaining open lines of communication with team members, stakeholders, and superiors is essential. However, there may be instances where lapses in communication occur specially with superiors, leading to misunderstandings or uncertainty about project progress. By consistently providing updates, actively listening to concerns, and addressing feedback promptly. I need to improve on consistently follow through on commitments, as I mentioned earlier, I presume that everyone in the team know the project timelines or if one team has dependencies on other teams. They might suggest this because they believe I have the ability to develop as a leader, and they see room for improvement in my communication, especially with leaders. They might also offer other feedback because we trust each other and have a good relationship. I will reciprocate by providing them with feedback as well. This shows our commitment to learning and growing as leaders to improve our skills. 3. If you choose to take action to strengthen your leadership credibility, what might you do and how will you recognize success? What changes might you expect to see? To enhance my leadership credibility, I might start by improving my communication and presentation skills with leaders. To achieve this, I will start with my teams and colleagues and seek feedback from them. Another crucial step which I believe I may have overlooked is listening to my peers on how they are providing details of the initiatives or project health to leaders. I could also enroll in communication training courses or workshops to learn new techniques and strategies. To recognize success, I could set specific goals for improvement, such as delivering clearer and more concise messages and updates with background during meetings or presentations. I could track my progress by soliciting feedback regularly and noting any positive changes in how others perceive my communication style. The first step would be to seek feedback from superiors and gradually seek feedback from other leaders.
