Questions: 1. Chris Hickman defined values that he wanted FungiX to have and placed them on plaques on the wall; teamwork, respect, integrity, learn, safety and honesty. But he worries that he and his team missed something before hiring VP of Sales, Steve Presario. What values in individual employees should Hickman be looking for? Articulate at least 4 individual values that you think are important. They should be different the six corporate values, though they can certainly be related. Chris should first evaluate someone’s genuine character to begin with. This would require him to understand what the employee has going on outside of the work place, and for him to see every side of a situation. If the person has a good character and does what they’re asked/instructed they are a good asset. The next thing to evaluate would be someone’s responsibility/awareness on the job. This is very important because your employees need to know what they are required to do so they can take responsibility of the situation and do their job to the best extent. This is also important for them to have so they can manage diversity and be prepared. The next skill I think Chris should look at is the way Steve operates with the rest of the team. Having congeniality as an association/business is key to success. Being a high performing individual with drive and passion for your job is another value that is vital to success especially in the sales market. 2. What would you do if you were in Chris Hickman’s shoes related to the Presario/Middlebrook conflict? Articulate at least 4 concrete steps you would take and provide reasoning behind each one. 1. He should first discuss with both Steve and Kelsey at the same time in order to figure out what exactly was said between the two so he can move forward in decisions. 2. Next he should go back and talk with Greg about the situation and weigh options with both employees. This is important because they are the two best employees that know each other the best. 3. After discussing with Greg and the other two I think Chris should get ahold of some of the largest investors to find their perspective on the situation. 4. I would lastly just be sure to separate Presario and Middlebrook as far as working spaces and job position location. This would be good to make sure they do not have lots of conflicts within. Maybe you could give them a day off and figure out an attitude adjustment.
3. What is the single most important value you plan to exhibit across your career? Why is it important? Provide an example or scenario of when you may know when you are correctly exhibiting that value. I plan to exhibit diligence/hard work for my career because it is something you can replace no matter who you are hiring or how talented they are. Even if you do not have a very strong grasp of what you are doing you can always try hard and figure out the idea and be successful. When I interned with Agrigold my freshman summer of college I had no idea about how to sell seed or any crop science operations really. With hard work and paying attention though I learned the right things to do and I eventually grew into a ‘normal salesman’.
