good. Running away and facing the unknown shows that he was a visionary and taking the bigger picture into consideration, all of which makes him an excellent leader (Fischer, 2010, p. 42).
A similar, albeit, reversed example of this would be Taft having more success in his role as Chief
Justice than in his presidency (Burns, 2018). Taft was not liked while in the highly known leadership role of presidency. However, he showed organizational, managerial, and leadership skills when in his role of Chief Justice. He practiced true statesmanship and was able to reform the federal judiciary and supreme court (Burns, 2018). This idea of being a leader verses a manager almost paints a right for the wrong reasons or wrong for the right reasons type of theology. Navigating these situations can be tricky and often lead people to believe that they are justified in their actions of stretching rules because it is for the greater good (Liberty University & Fischer, 2019).
However, this is why it should never be left to the individual to navigate such instances on their own. A higher power is imperative in everyone’s life for their decision making, especially in a statesmanship role where so many other lives are affected by the decision.
Within social work and the issue of burnout, statesmanship should focus on implementing positive changes to increase organizational trust. However, child welfare is a hands-on field and any leader apart of it is expected to jump into emergencies and help make decisions. The ideal leader would need to meet a list of criteria, including copious experience in the field, expert coping and detachment skills, while remaining emotionally present and involved in the traumatic
scenarios that are common. Sometimes, problematic situations do present with the options of either choosing to support the family at risk or the worker at risk of burnout. With such challenging issues decisions to make, the ideal statesman in who could actually create positive reform would benefit greatly from having a strong relationship with God rooted in faith (Osuagwu, 2023).
