In my profession networking is necessity, especially if you are planning on staying in the industry after military service.  My field very small so it is highly likely that there is someone you know/or knows of you at every location or in every organization.  Think the 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon but make it 3 degrees.  Networking is something that leadership stresses to junior members of our organizations constantly.  A person needs to be very deliberate in what characteristics and work ethic they portray.  Actions have consequences, so it is important to think about what you’re doing at work, or in your off time, because callus mistakes (especially operational and legal mistakes) can follow you after your leave the organization. What steps will you take to build or expand your network?  - I plan to continue to be myself.  Demonstrate my attributes and continue to push for self- improvement and the improvement of those around me.  Given my current position, I interact with new military members daily and it important to show them what right looks like and mentor them, as I was, so they can find success.  Honesty is a key component to network expansion and quality mentorship.  Never oversell yourself or what you know.  Dishonesty is fastest way to lose the trust of another person, and trust is very hard to rebuild. - Seeking our volunteer opportunities also a great way to expand your network. Finding quality organizations and causes to work with can expand your horizons and networks beyond your professional/work network. - I have also researched the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. But not quite prepared enough yet to choose an organization to join. What are your short-term and long-term goals for networking? Be sure to make these SMART goals. - With networking already being such a key component of my industry, I would say that my goals are to continue to put myself out there and demonstrate my abilities. It is important to push yourself beyond your safety net. Staying conscience of my attitudes, actions/reactions, and interactions with those around me. As mentioned above, honesty is key to building and maintaining quality relationships. - Continue to build and maintain relationships with past leaders, mentors, and mentees. Just because you leave a location, or someone else leaves, that is not the end of the relationship. You never know when you will need to reach back out for assistance, or who may reach out to you to help them through a particular situation. Which professional networks would be the most beneficial to you and why?  - Looking through the UMGC Organizations page, I believe that joining the UMGC Society of for Human Resources Management would be beneficial for generating networks in the Human Resource field. While military leadership has many similarities to HR Management, there are differences on the business side that go beyond working with the human side of life.
