Reflection Paper 2 When reflecting on previous experiences regarding leadership, I had a certain situation come to mind that related to the Ted Talk I watched this week. I was given a leadership role in a student organization and some of the people I worked with felt as though I was not prepared enough for the role since I was younger than them and had less experience. This goes back to what Poornima Luthra discusses in the Ted Talk as she says that generations do not trust other generations as much and ageism is very common today even when we might not notice it (Luthra, 2020). Considering how a person in a leadership role could be inclusive means that they are recognizing the need for a wide range of backgrounds, personalities, and experience in their employees (Williams & Mihaylo, 2019). I especially think it is important for leaders to follow some of the recommendations I read in the article which suggest having a diverse pool of employees, limit referrals, ask skills-based questions, and define a “culture fit,” with all these things in mind I feel as though a leader can have a more successful team as well as less bias in the workplace (Williams & Mihaylo, 2019). Continuing to work on maintaining diversity and inclusivity in the workplace is extremely important because without the continuation of support for employees and contributing to the unbiases in the workplace, ageism and other issues will arise without warning (Kalev & Dobbin, 2022). There can be challenges with this though because of the differences people have, everyone needs a different level of support, and that support can look very different depending on who you are dealing with (Kalev & Dobbin, 2022). Support can be shown through flexible scheduling, childcare support, support to women and minorities, and then make sure leaders are following through with this support (Kalev & Dobbin, 2022). I feel like this next generation of leaders is the workplace is very openminded and willing to find ways to make sure all employees are successful and comfortable in their work life balance. If there are challenges, I believe people are willing to do the work necessary to find a solution and help the employee in need, but it really does begin with the leadership and their impact on the workplace.
