2 While many effective leaders tend to serve in management roles, leaders do not necessarily have to be in a position of authority. Managers are appointed to their positions. They tend to communicate policies and expectations established by the organization or facility. Managers are in authority positions that hire, evaluate, recommend for promotions, and release from services. Leaders are typically motivated and compassionate about their vision. They tend to inspire others to participate in implementing change for the benefit of the unit. Leaders motivate others to participate in the movement of change. Where I know I have plenty of growth ahead of me, I consider myself to have leadership and management skills in place. A few of my leadership skills would be the following: compassionate about my role as a nurse, advocate for change, ability to collaborate with others to implement change. I am the chair of our unit-based council at work. As the chair, I engage with staff in my unit to recognize areas for improvement and collaborate with staff to develop plans for process changes. I am a preceptor for helping with training new staff members. I tend to be the kind of person who people come to with questions. I am compassionate about advocating for my patients by collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to ensure needs are met. I would consider a few of my management skills to be the following: knowledge of organizational policies, ability to educate staff on organizational policies, and assisting with evaluation of employee performance. I participate in many committees within my organization which helps with gaining knowledge of policies and procedures. I am a charge nurse and preceptor for my unit.
3 I am compassionate about teaching new staff about policies but also how to be effective while also working within the protocols. I frequently assist with staff skill check offs for the annual competencies. As a leader, I consider a few of areas of improvement are the following: self-awareness skills, adjusting my communication styles to cater to each person, and finding better ways on getting people motivated to be involved in unit change. Our organization offers many different types of education and training to help us grow professionally. To build self-awareness skills, I can participate in weekly or biweekly mindfulness activities that is offered through our whole health programs. I can enroll in training that will improve my communication skills. I have learned that communication is key to motivating others to be involved. I can also sign up for motivational speaking training session to help me develop new strategies on getting others engaged and involved within unit change. A few areas that I could improve my management skills are the following: communication skills, strategic planning, and innovation. As mentioned before, our organization has many opportunities to help us grow professionally. I can enroll in training to help with mindful listening skills and improve my communication skills. Our organization offers quarterly leadership training cohorts to help with growth as a leader. I can enroll in leadership training courses that will help me develop additional skills such as strategic planning and innovation. Leadership mindsets can support long-term personal goals and professional goals. A few examples of are the following: building a positive self-image and self-esteem. I have learned that self- care is imperative for mind and body replenishment to prevent burnout. Maintaining a leadership mindset can support long-term professional goals. A few examples are the following: being able to communicate effectively to inspire others and implement change and promotion into leadership or management positions. Maintaining leadership mindsets can pave the way for growth into leadership positions, which gives one the authority to implement the changes the staff are so eager to see.

4 My long-term personal and professional goal is to be able to be a voice for nursing. Our floors are understaffed, and nurse-to-patient ratios continue to rise. Our outpatient nurses are being treated as if they are the provider’s administrative assistants instead of nurses. Nurses should be able to practice within their full scope of practice while also feeling safe while doing so. Nurses need a leader who will advocate for not only the best interest for quality patient care but also for nurses to be able to provide quality care in a safe environment without fear of making an error because of increase in stress and being overworked. As a leader, I will ensure equity and inclusivity within my unit by weekly rounding with staff and monthly staff meetings. Weekly rounding is a good tool for checking on staff individually to see how they are doing, ask what is and what is not working well in their area, make sure they have the equipment they need, and to provide mentoring as needed. Monthly staff meetings is a good tool for keeping staff up to date on any policy or procedural changes, unit performance updates, discuss any upcoming events or trainings, collaborate with staff on any areas of concern and brainstorm ideas on implementing changes. Encouraging staff to collaborate as a team to develop ideas for process improvement changes is a good way for staff to implement changes that directly affect the until. It is important for leaders to be fair with all staff and not show any signs of favoritism. It is equally important for staff to feel as they are a valuable part of the team and that their voice matters.
