Case Study: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Reputation and Impact on Stakeholders The University of Arizona Global Campus BUS250: Corporate and Social Responsibility 13 November 2023
Microsoft The company that I have selected is Microsoft. Not only does this company have a 100% CSR rating, but it is one that I am familiar with. I have chosen this company because I am a consumer of their products and was once a shareholder. What I admire most is that even with a perfect CSR rating, the company is still making moves to focus on continuous improvement and is taking on the challenges of global warming. In this essay, I will highlight how Microsoft has sustained its perfect CSR rating and how it intends to go carbon-negative by the year 2030. Describe the problem(s) that the company is addressing and how they are addressing it. Microsoft shows a high level of self-awareness by identifying its footprint and taking corrective action to correct it. “Its goal not only commits that by 2030 Microsoft will be carbon negative, but it also pledges that by 2050 Microsoft will remove from the environment all the carbon the company has emitted either directly or by electrical consumption since it was founded in 1975” (Smith, 2020). Their plan revolves around erasing carbon from the environment across the three identified scopes. These scopes include vehicle emissions, traditional energy sources, and indirect sources from manufacturers. Identify at least one internal and one external stakeholder for the company with respect to the problem identified. First, we must identify and understand exactly what a stakeholder is. A stakeholder is defined as “the people and firms that interact with, can influence, and are affected by the corporate operations.” This means someone who has mutually beneficial interests in the success of the company. An internal stakeholder for Microsoft would be its employees. The employees
of the company greatly benefit from the success of the company as it means that there are incentives, and they maintain their CSR. An external stakeholder for the company would be other groups or corporations that work alongside Microsoft. An example of this would be any company involved with renewable energy. Other tech companies may benefit from their environmental awareness as well. Aligning themselves with Microsoft’s CSR and engaging both internal and external stakeholders would be vital for all companies to successfully achieve the goal of carbon reduction. Assess the effects of the company’s CSR initiatives on each of the stakeholders you identified. Microsoft’s CSR initiatives continue to engage their employees by fostering positive work environments and enhancing employee satisfaction. This creates a culture that encourages members to believe in what the company stands for by taking care of “home” first. To be successful externally, you must have good standing within. As far as the external stakeholders are concerned, the company continues to lead in innovative practices and industry leadership. This will influence many more as they have a strong history of standing by their mission statement. Determine whether the company is successfully communicating its mission to the stakeholders. The company has been very transparent about its efforts. You can find their CSR listed with just a quick online search. Their official website has its CSR statement and official information listed on the official Microsoft Blog site. This type of transparency proves that they

plan to involve their stakeholders and push them to be informed on everything their company stands for. Provide two to three recommendations for how the company can improve its CSR presence or program. My only recommendations for the company are collaborating with peers and continuing to monitor the metrics in place to track their progress. This will help them adjust and cater to their strengths and weaknesses along the way as they continue their reign of excellence. By working with peers, it could create a global impact that is much greater than initially considered. Utilizing outside resources could help them maintain their long-term management of financial, social, and environmental risks. Conclusion In conclusion, Microsoft is continuously evolving and staying true to its Corporate Social Responsibility. They are taking on the challenge of reducing their carbon footprint on the world and taking the initiative to be carbon-negative by eliminating processes that are harmful to the world. They are effectively utilizing their internal and external stakeholders to turn hopes into reality and lead the way in innovative practices. These are the things that have enabled Microsoft to receive its perfect rating for Corporate Social Responsibility. If they continue this trajectory, there is little doubt that they will be successful in their future endeavors.
