Mid-Course Reflection After reviewing and thinking about all we have learned and gone over thus far, I very much agree that to be a successful educational leader, it is important to be an instructional leader. Coming into this class, I felt still more as I had growing up in Germany and what I had experienced, namely a hierarchical leadership. This seems to still be more the norm in Germany as well as at some schools here in America. Although I do think that at times one will have to make decisions as a leader, but I think most of the time one will lead together and together changes will be made. At our school we are kind of running into this right now. Our principal, who is 2 nd year principal at our school as well as being a principal, has been trying to build his leadership role as an instructional leader but been running into difficulties building leadership teams because a lot of teachers do not want to step up to a leadership position and are still used to the hierarchical leadership or just would like to be told what they should do instead of being part of the decision makers and then there are some struggles with setting expectations as well as role-model leading and following through with what expectations have been set. Unfortunately, this can be seen in the difference of student behaviors from prior years and unless we all start getting on the same page with expectations, modelling, assessing situations, planning, and reflecting, I feel, we may be in for a tough road ahead. Therefore, I think that for the future, I would like to concentrate at student behaviors (destroying school property, not following instructions, running away…) and how I can make a difference as a teacher leader within our school. I already seem to be the disciplinary for the kindergarten students because they are sent to my classroom for me to handle when they do not listen in their own classroom. I also am the one who worked on a new curriculum for the German side grades 1-4, which has been voted into effect just a couple weeks ago and have now been asked to be the 5 th grade teacher to help with behaviors in there and investigate curriculum for 5 th grade. I think beginning with being a role model, which I have always tried to be, is a good start and trying to get others stepping into role-model positions as well starting to mentor others and myself asking for help from others may help make some necessary changes in our school.
