Discussion Topic: One decision all organizations must make is how power and decision- making authority must be shared. As discussed in Chapter 7, organizations may either be centralized, decentralized, or a combination of both, when it comes to who makes the decisions. Think of an organization with which you are familiar. This may be somewhere you have worked, a non-profit with which you have been associated, or even your own family unit. How is decision-making authority distributed in this organization? Is this the most efficient method of decision-making in this instance? Why or why not? Would you recommend the organization redistributes decision- making power in a different way? If so, what potential benefits would this have to the group? During this week’s seminar, we discussed how some organizations operate as both centralized and decentralized. This is the case in the structure for my current company. The CEO of the organization makes the decisions and delegates implementation of the decisions to various site locations and departments. Due to the nature of the product/services offered and regulated footprints, the organization also embraces both a functional approach and a divisional approach. Differentiation is high in the company I work for due to the many subunits in the company. Once the CEO and executive leadership team have developed the strategic goals and vision for the organization, the middle level managers are afforded some flexibility with implementation for their respective site locations and teams. The objective remains the same, but creativity by local leaders could be exercised to reach the goals. I believe this is the most efficient way for the organization because it considers variances in the employee pool. Additionally, site location leaders are afforded the opportunity to take faster action when impacted by local factors, i.e. service outages, weather events. I would not recommend the organization take a different approach. The company’ strategic goals are currently being met and the company goals for the various sites are also being met. This decision-making power structure currently in place creates the most efficient and beneficial approach for the organization.
