1 Annie Namgoong Assignment: Unit 7 CSR Policy MT140 Introduction to Management Purdue University Global Dr. Brenda Harper 11/7/2023
2 Introduction Amazon is widely known as the go-to e-commerce that gives its consumers access to what appears to be endless products and services, with a clear focus on ensuring rapid delivery of sought after products through its many offerings for shipping products. Amazon also places a huge focus on community involvement. Understanding their obligation toward society assumed by business, Amazon is committed to their corporate social responsibility (CSR) with many community initiatives. Amazon invests in the communities where they live and work, “helping to generate economic growth, while working alongside community partners to build impactful programs and create solutions to pressing challenges” ( Communities - Amazon Sustainability , n.d.). CSR Initiatives The pillar of responsibility that Amazon seems most focused on is philanthropic. Two priority areas that Amazon focuses on include creating and preserving affordable housing and improving access to food and basic needs. In keeping true to their commitment to invest in communities where they live and work, in 2021, Amazon launched the Housing Equity Fund. This commitment included a $2 billion investment to create more than 20,000 affordable homes in communities with a high concentration of Amazon employees ( Communities - Amazon Sustainability , n.d.). Many families struggle with the rising costs of housing and this CSR initiative is directed at providing financial support to these families in communities that are currently strained. In 2019, Amazon was “one of the first retailers to accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) payments for online transactions” ( Communities - Amazon Sustainability , n.d.). This accomplishment allowed Amazon’s customers who receive government public assistance the opportunity to purchase fresh, healthy food. This access gave
3 customers with low to no income access to both delivery service from Amazon directly as well as in store opportunities at Whole Foods Market. Often, families that are facing challenges financially have limited access to quality, healthy food. This transition to accepting SNAP created better opportunities for these families. Mission Statement Amazon's mission statement is “to be Earth's most customer-centric company.” The company's vision statement is “to be earth's most customer-centric company; to build a place where people can come to find and discover anything they might want to buy online” (Pereira, 2023). Amazon maintains product inventory to satisfy most every customer’s buying needs, while also aiming to offer the best prices. Understanding the consumer’s need for immediate satisfaction, in some areas, Amazon also offers same delivery. This focus on meeting the customers’ need demonstrates its commitment to being customer-centric. This mission statement directly aligns with the initiative Amazon has launched to improving access to food and basic needs. Additionally, in 2022, Amazon delivered more than 10 million meals through its community Delivery program. These meals were offered at no cost to those in need. Amazon has made substantial investments in providing housing securities to those in need. These “commitments have protected or created 8,000 affordable units to house more than 18,000” (The Amazon Housing Equity Fund Impact Report, 2022). Amazon remains focused on CSR initiatives. Conclusion Through its demonstrated focus on community initiatives, Amazon continues to position themselves for success in living up to their commitment to leave the world better than they found it. Amazon has helped to provide housing stability and reduce food insecurities for their customers.
