Dylan Harloff 2/9/2021 MGMT 296 Professor Abudi Case Study 2 Being charged with a project such as this one can be quite difficult to manage due to the significance of this event. Amber Briggs has an important task as she has been put in charge of organizing the 10th anniversary of Kerzner Office Equipment’s being in business. She has been assigned a 14-person team with employees from different departments within the company. Her skills as a manager will be tested during this project as this event will impact more than the company’s budget. However, she did not get off to the optimal start as her first meeting had a few speed bumps. In view of the time constraints and the delayed beginning, Briggs probably achieved as much as possible in this meeting. However, you can question how her team was feeling after their first meeting. First, some of the members seem to have a negative attitude towards the project. This can be a major problem down the road. If the team’s motivation is low towards this project, the employees will not put their best efforts into the final product of the project. Secondly, her team members have no clear idea how and what kind of involvement they will need in order to produce the final product that top management has requested of them. Amber should have predicted that there would be a time problem with the first meeting due to the little notice in advance for this meeting. She could avoided have avoided this by simply asking for her team members schedules and schedule a proper time in a proper conference room. Amber is bound to face a multitude of boundaries while the team attempts to complete the project. One boundary that may affect the project is the size of the team. A
14-person team is a large group for a project. This can lead to miscommunication because important information may not reach all members on the team. This will lead to bigger problems as it affects their teamwork. It can cause conflicts among team members and can potentially delay the project (Project, 2021). A solution to this problem would be to divide the team into small team or subgroups focused on major tasks. This will allow communication to flow properly and have the important information that each member requires to be delivered. A second boundary that may arise is that the team members were not selected based on expertise and skill. This can affect the time and quality of the project. If team members are not smart or are not trained enough to perform assigned tasks, it can put the development in a risky spot. (Kashyap, 2020). One way to work around this issue would be to clarify each team members’ roles in the project, supplement expertise with outside input, delegate roles carefully. This will help work around the skill and expertise she has been given to work with. Another boundary that could arise is no experience working together on event projects. Having employees from different departments work together on a project can be difficult as there is a lack of trust between them. If there is a lack of between employees then they will not want to engage because they have not made that human connection and they will not fully trust each other (Flint, 2016). A solution to this boundary is building a personal relationship with between your team members. The more they know about each other, the more they will learn to work together as they begin to understand each other. These are a few of the boundaries that Amber may face when attempting to complete this project. There is a lot that Amber needs to accomplish before the next meeting with her project team. First, she needs to meet each team member and establish the type of
contributions with the time and willingness they plan to contribute to the project. Speaking to participants, she can test some of her ideas about how to structure the project and revisit these proposals as she gains new knowledge. She will also gain an understanding on the initial commitment level each employee displays. She also needs to create a master project plan that provides a list of key goals, a summary of essential activities and how the project is being accomplished by the team. She should seek guidance from people who have expertise in organizing such activities outside the organization. This is key because her team members will have a clear picture of what she envisions for the final product for the event. Amber has been tasked with a very important project to the company. She needs to show her experience and lead this team. Amber is going to have to deal with some boundaries due to her the make up of the team she was assigned. She will need to face these boundaries head on in order to be an affective manager and produce a product that meets the top management standards.
