Massasoit Community College Firefighter Safety and Survival Fire205-W01 HW #2 C2 Define the following according to the Travis Book: Crew integrity - the practice of staying together as a crew; working with at least one other firefighter; or staying within voice, visual, or physical contact of one another. Discipline - adherence to one’s role and responsibility on the emergency scene; staying within one’s incident management system’s position; a system of rules of conduct or method of practice Liability- exposure to responsibility or accountability at a personal or professional level; the state of being legally responsible. Negligence- the failure to act when one has a duty to act. When that duty is breached, it may result in injuries or damages as a proximate cause of the breach. Situational awareness -the constant awareness of one’s surroundings in a dynamic, immediately dangerous to life and health environment; includes the perception of the environment critical to decision makers in other complex, dynamic fields such as aviation, air traffic control, power plant operations, and military command and control. _____________________________________________________________________ Discuss traditions that have compromised fire and emergency services safety and the role that the individual plays in eliminating the unsafe and promoting the safe traditions. Traditions are preserved for wha they mean and signify however sometimes overlooked is the consequences to some of these actions. Such as when something is done and when questioned why it is done this way, instead of improving those methods or ways it restored back to because this was how its always been done or the has been how one been trained and have been training staff. Also hazing can have an opposite affect and instead o unifying members it an cause hostility and some bullying.
Describe changes that need to occur in order to reduce firefighter LODDs and injuries It is difficult at times to force change in behaviors or ways of doing things, everyone is resistive to change. Most LODDs are due to our own actions, sense of awarenesss around us, and what we choose to do next. However with change comes improvement in techniques equipment and protocols for safety. Having annual competencies allows you to see your strengths and weakness and how to improve those areas. With improving areas you maintain the crews integrity. Implementing what is practiced and educated on can improve outcomes and prevent injuries. Explain an “After Action Review” and its importance. An “aFter Action Review ‘ is the second step iand is a review oafter a significant event has occurred. This is when the incident report is filled out and it summarizes the situation and with positive nd negatives included. This allows for every incident to be learned from and something is taken away from it , wither it be how well it was handled or where improvements could be made, improvoemtns are always benefiting the crew to be safe. It is shed away from however due to thinking it is picking out what is wrong or pointing fingers at someone. IT holds the department and staff responsible and personally responsible to keep them and their staff safe. The book describes three methods (tools) to promote accountability. Identify and briefly describe the three. Empowerment, ownership and motivation are the three methods the books describes as promote safety and accountability. Empower means to give confidence and become stringer, so if you are aware of your strengths and ways to encourage you and your fellow staff to keep performing at the highest level possible while performing according to safety protocols including properly approaching a fellow co worker to make sure they are perfuming their taks safe and appropriately making them aware if they are not. Ownership is through instilling confidence in one oanother and to own up or to be accountable for all actions and stopping unsafe behaviors, as well as being able to identify weakness and how to improve them or owning up to what you don’t know to improve yourself and team. Motivation allows for all the benefits that come from a safe outcome and that is always being able to go home. Explain the two legal consequences of unsafe behavior.
Liability is when you have failed to act properly and demonstrate your knowledge that you have learned. It means to vie legally responsible. Negligence is the failure to ace when you have a duty to act, so you need to be able to perform the duties and tasks assigned of you with competence.
