CLC - Jar Case Study In the video "Servant Leadership: How a Jar Can Change the Way You Lead and Serve," Ali Fett explores the concept of servant leadership and its transformative power. Fett delves into the analogy of a jar, explaining how a leader's role is to serve and support others, just as a jar holds and nurtures its contents. Through her insightful presentation, Fett highlights the importance of empathy, humility, and selflessness in leadership. This case study, discusses the struggles and glory of exceeding expectations when setting goals, the value and importance of seeking understanding, the power to create a better version of oneself, and a summary explanation of the items that will aid one on a journey known as "You Lead You." – Megan Set Goals and Exceed The way that I set goals is by first developing an idea of what I want to achieve from the goal that I am going to commit to. Then, you must plan out how you are going to achieve the goal that you are committing to. Goals should be things that could better your life mentally, physically, and basically anything or anywhere you want to get better at. Goals should improve yours and even others around lives. I exceed my own expectations of the goals I have set by working on my goals every single day and prioritizing the things and situations that I need to work on, so that I can achieve my goals. Sacrifices need to be made to make sure you exceed your own expectations you have for yourself. - Jackson Seek to Understand One way you can seek to understand by asking good questions instead of seeking to be understood is by using a concept found in Ali’s TED talk which is called stop and pause. Being intentional and an active listener is crucial in seeking to understand. A good follow-up question is a keyway of seeing if someone was listening to what you said. Another way to seek to understand is by caring about the individual who is talking. If you care about the person, you will 2
want to understand what they are saying to you. To do this Alli says you have to create a safe environment for ideas to be said out loud. A place where a person isn’t going to be judged or put down but what they say. It allows people to be themselves. - Brennan Power to Create Next Best Version I agree with Ali that people have the power to create the next best versions of themselves. Servant leadership is all about not only bettering yourself but others. Servant leaders help others create the best versions of themselves. They also focus on building community and being committed to the growth of others. All of these things focus on lifting others up. In life everyone has the freedom to be and to do whatever they want, which gives them the ability to be whatever version of themselves they want to be. Everyone has the capability to choose to be the best version of themselves, but it requires discipline and hard work to want to change and better yourself. - Erin Seven Items The first concept is to take a moment to stop and pause because we can observe nonverbals and then respond accordingly rather than producing an immediate reaction. Secondly, to value individuality creates an environment which allows individuals to be who they are supposed to be and confidently. Thirdly, praise and acknowledgment should be practiced regularly because when work is recognized and praised, it not only affirms the individual but also gives them confidence to continue. The fourth concept is to not create assumptions that assume the worst and rather, “flip the coin” to seek to understand individuals by asking questions. Second to last, through empowerment individuals are encouraged to complete their job in their own creative way. Lastly, transparency resembles vulnerability in a leader and reflects that they will not get defensive, which promotes others to be transparent and vulnerable as well because they feel safe to do so.- Molly 3
