2 Part 2: Reflection based on the Interviews The interview with the project manager provided a deeper understanding of project management by shedding light on the practical applications of theoretical concepts learned in the course. One key takeaway was the dynamic nature of a project manager's daily responsibilities, involving a mix of meetings, project reviews, and strategic planning. This aligns with the course's emphasis on adaptability, recognizing that the project management landscape is inherently dynamic and requires constant prioritization (Schwalbe, 2019). Several aspects of the conversation resonated with the expectations derived from the course materials. The emphasis on team dynamics, diverse skill sets, and fostering a positive work environment aligns with the principles of effective teamwork and leadership discussed in the course (Belbin, 2011). The manager's reliance on technological tools like Slack and Trello for communication and task tracking mirrors the course's acknowledgment of the integral role technology plays in modern project management (Schwalbe, 2019). The interview also revealed surprising nuances that go beyond the textbook understanding of project management. The emphasis on proactive communication and the real- world case of overcoming a supplier delay demonstrated the practical challenges faced by project managers. These scenarios, while hinted at in coursework, showcased the complexity of real- world problem-solving and the need for agile, creative solutions. The biggest challenges faced by the project manager included unexpected regulatory changes and supplier delays, highlighting the unpredictability inherent in project management. These challenges required not only adaptability but also a proactive approach to communication and problem-solving. On the positive side, the manager expressed enjoyment in the collaborative aspects of the role, particularly in building and leading diverse teams. The satisfaction derived
3 from successfully navigating challenges and achieving project goals was evident in the manager's anecdotes. The interview significantly heightened my interest in being involved with projects and potentially pursuing a career as a project manager. The real-world insights into the challenges and rewards of the role provided a more nuanced perspective than theoretical coursework alone. Witnessing the manager's passion for the collaborative and problem-solving aspects of their work has inspired me to actively seek opportunities to apply project management principles in future endeavors. The interview underscored the dynamic nature of the field, and my enthusiasm for embracing challenges and leading teams has been further fueled by this enlightening conversation.
