The history and origins of strategic planning is intrinsically tied to military history. This is because strategy has its roots in warfare (Freedman, 2022). It begun, as Sridharan (2023) would put it, from the “necessity of peoples to defeat their enemies”. However, with the birth of the Corporation came with it the necessity for corporate bodies to conduct their affairs in a manner that was consistent and aimed at conferring an advantage over other corporations, hence the adaptation of strategy into business. Modern strategic planning has changed a lot. As Maijanen, (2020) points out, the focus of the strategic planning swung, much like a pendulum, between a focus on the internal factors to the external, back to the internal, and then from the static to the dynamic. The field has also evolved from a framework that could only explain how organizations got to where they got to where they are, to developing the capability to predict the future. However, some things have stayed consistent about the field; and these are captured in the various definitions; the focus on the environment, resources, and scope. Modern organizations utilize vision and mission statements to communicate purpose, goals, and values ( Principles of Management , 2015). Essentially, vision and mission statements keep organizations “grounded”. They remind the organization of their overarching objective(s) and the framework through which they aim to achieve same. Here’s the vision and mission statements of the MTN Ghana Foundation ( Foundation | MTN Ghana , 2023): Vision To be the benchmark for Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiatives in Ghana and within the MTN Group. Missio n To improve the quality of lives of people through appropriate and sustainable corporate social responsibility interventions in communities where MTN operates. I believe that these statements capture the essence of the organization, the work they are doing and their general direction for me. To improve this, the organization could add a timeframe to their vision statement and make it read: “ To be the benchmark for Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiatives in Ghana and within the MTN Group within the next five (5) years ”. It could also include some more detail to their mission statement by limiting the areas they would be looking at, such as healthcare, education, or sustainable agriculture. Implementing this, we could have a mission statement that looks like “ To improve the quality of lives of people through appropriate and sustainable corporate social responsibility interventions in communities where MTN operates by focusing on sustainable agricultural initiatives, and education ”. To conclude; strategic planning has it roots from warfare. It has since evolved leaps and bounds since its introduction into the business context from a field that seemed to be useful only for explaining retrospectively how businesses got to where they are, to a field that is actively developing the competency of being on top of new developments. Vision and mission statements are very important to keeping an organization grounded. They serve as a reminder of the organization’s overarching objectives and framework of operation.
