2 Prof. Ingram’s Chapter One Questions 1. Of the four main functions managers fulfill (planning, organizing, leading, and controlling), which do you think is most likely to be enhanced by an understanding of organizational behavior? Explain, and be specific. The most important function of managers that can give insight into organizational behavior is the “Planning” stage because at this stage manager allocate resources according to the competencies of each individual involved (Indeed Editorial Team, 2023). During the planning stage, managers not only indulge in strategic planning but also tactical and operational planning. For instance, if am a manager and I have to assign the project. I will only be able to get the maximum benefit out of the project when I know the people around me and their competencies. My planning will be specific and based on the skills and qualities of each individual. 2. Construct a hypothesis with “stormy weather” as your independent variable and then select your own dependent variable. Write it so that the reader (me, in this case) will easily understand what your hypothesis is. (Don’t worry about whether or not your hypothesis is likely to be correct. In fact, creativity on your part is encouraged.) My hypothesis will be There is a positive correlation between Stormy weather and a person’s sadness. “ 3. Why do you believe hypothesis testing is important in organizational behavior research? Hypothesis testing is important in behavioral research because it provides an empirical understanding of the behavior. Organizational behavior is the branch that deals with the
3 understanding of group interactions and how the interaction impacts the performance. It is important to base the understanding on empirical grounds for it to be generalized. 4. Of what use could researchers make of hypothesis testing in the attempt to determine if an increase in an employee’s job satisfaction level leads to an increase in that individual’s performance? The benefit of testing the hypothesis is that it will give an insight into the relationship between two variables and at the same time it will provide direction of the relationship. Based on the direction, new goals and training can be set for each employee. For instance, if job satisfaction is high then it will lead to high individual performance. The relationship will show that there is no need to be worried about the employee engaging in counterproductive behavior or turnover intention. But if job satisfaction is low then the company needs to work on the needs of the employee.
