1.) It is important for teachers to reflect on cultural and linguistic diversity because the student will feel like the teacher wants to learn about their culture and that they will feel accepted by the teacher. 2.) The difference between BICS and CALP is that BICS focuses on social language acquisition. BICS refers to a student’s understanding of basic conversation. CALP focuses on academic language acquisition. CALP refers to a student’s understanding of more advanced and complex language necessary for academic purposes. It is important for teachers to understand the distinction between these two types of language proficiency because the teacher can know which stage of learning to communicate for each student to meet their needs 3.) This might be proved problematic because Maria’s parents will not be able to read the letter or they will feel uncomfortable to communicate back to Mr. Bennett in English. I recommend Mr. Bennett is for him to talk to Maria and ask her about how her parents communicate at home. If they don’t know much English, it is best to have a translator, even when Maria can translate for her parents. Another option for Mr. Bennett is for him to use a website that can translate the letter for him. 4.) Mr. Stone can spend time looking and researching each student’s culture and how he can relate to their culture. He could give examples from each student’s culture that would help the students to understand Mr. Stone’s lessons while in teaching.
