EMERGENT LITERACY COMPONENT 3: Practicum: Module 4: Try-It Out 4 For this Try-It Out Activity , you will reflect on and plan to engage families in their childrens’ emergent reading and writing development.   Choose one of the following strategies to implement with the families in your early care and education environment.  1. Refer to Handout: A Strengths-Based Approach to Family Literacy for implementation suggestions.   2. Use the planning form to guide you in developing and implementing the strategy. Strategy Options Invite families to share about their literacy experiences. Provide a variety of reading materials that relate to what is important to the families. Use families’ home languages in the learning environment. Include all family members and encourage multiple ways in which they can contribute (e.g., verbal storytelling, reading, sharing a piece of writing or a piece of art, etc.). Incorporate materials that honor children with special needs. Offer multiple ways to connect or communicate with the families. Recognize that literacy is a way to empower the family through stimulating thoughts and social interaction. Encourage shared family reading experiences. Try-It Out Planning Form:  Engaging Families in Emergent Literacy Development Step 1: Please identify which of the strategies you choose to implement. Language Identification: Conduct surveys and hold one-on-one meetings to identify exactly what language families use at home. Database Creation: Establish a comprehensive language database in our preschool community based on data collected from surveys and meetings. Multilingual Environment: I am committed to implementing multilingual signage, including signs, labels and billboards that reflect the diverse languages of our community. EMERGENT LITERACY COMPONENT 3: Practicum: Module 4: Try-It Out 4 Daily Routines Integration: I will seamlessly integrate various languages into our daily routines, incorporating greetings, weather discussions, and calendar time. Multilingual Resource Library: I will work collaboratively with families to build a library of children's books in various languages, ensuring representation and diversity. Family Contributions: I will actively encourage families to contribute and donate books in their native languages, recognizing and appreciating their valuable contributions. Language Celebration Events: Monthly cultural celebrations will be organized, and I will invite families to share their traditions in their native languages during these events. This personalized plan represents a commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment where we respect and celebrate the linguistic diversity of our families while actively engaging them in their children's emergent literacy development. Step 2: Plan for implementation of the strategy. “Family Literacy Enhancement Program” Language Assessment: Conduct a survey to identify the home languages spoken by families. Create a comprehensive database of the languages represented within the preschool community. Multilingual Environment: Develop multilingual signs for common areas, classroom, and outdoor spaces. Involve children in creating bilingual labels for objects within the classroom. Introduce signage in multiple languages throughout the preschool, including labels, posters, and bulletin boards. Seamlessly integrate diverse languages into daily routines, such as greetings, weather discussions, and calendar time. EMERGENT LITERACY COMPONENT 3: Practicum: Module 4: Try-It Out 4 Establish a library of children's books in various languages, representing the home languages of the preschool community. Actively encourage families to contribute and donate books in their native languages. Cultural Celebrations: Develop a strategic annual calendar for cultural events, aligning with various holiday seasons to create a well-rounded plan for language and culture inclusion initiatives. Craft a detailed plan for each celebration, precisely outlining specific activities, objectives, and cultural elements, ensuring a structured and purposeful approach. Capitalize on special occasions, including key holiday seasons like Christmas, as prime opportunities to host language diversity events that delve into the richness of various linguistic traditions. Benefits of the Strategy: implementing this “Family Literacy Enhancement Program” , we aim to create a nurturing and culturally rich learning environment. Monitoring and Evaluation: We will continue to collect feedback from families and staff to measure the impact of the program. Reflection on Implementation: • The introduction of the home language in the learning environment has been very successful. • Families are actively involved during collection and drop-off, encouraging interaction and volunteering to share their diverse culture with the class. EMERGENT LITERACY COMPONENT 3: Practicum: Module 4: Try-It Out 4 Step 3: Pause and Try-It Out Before continuing to complete the assignment, try your planned activity in your classroom.   Note how it went and how the children responded and come back to finish answering the reflection questions. Step 4: Reflect on how it went. What worked well? What would you do differently?   The children really enjoyed the involvement of their families, who were actively involved in the sharing and reading activities. What Worked Well: Active Family Participation: Families enthusiastically engaged in reading and sharing activities, fostering a sense of community. Multicultural Elements: Children exhibited a keen interest in the multicultural aspects integrated into the learning environment, broadening their cultural awareness. Inclusive Engagement: Both English and non-English speaking families participated inclusively, contributing to a diverse and collaborative atmosphere. What Would You Do Differently: Volunteer Coordination: Establishing a pre-sign-up volunteer list for families would streamline coordination and ensure smoother participation in future activities. Library Card Resources: Provide additional resources on how families can sign up for library cards, enhancing their engagement in literacy activities and encouraging extended learning beyond the classroom. Multicultural Book Basket Expansion: Consider expanding the multicultural book basket to encompass more languages and diverse cultural representations, further enriching the available literacy resources and catering to a broader range of cultural backgrounds Page 4 of 5 © 2023 University of Florida Lastinger Center for Learning
