Clinical Field Experience A: Language Focus Brenathia Powell College of Education, Grand Canyon University ESL-540: Methods of Structured English Immersion for Elementary Education Dr. Irina Irish November 15, 2023
Part 1: Interview and Observation How do you address language form (vocabulary, grammar, and discourse specific to a particular content area) and language function (the purposes for communication/use of language in academic and social contexts) in your classroom? - In my classroom, I teach vocabulary using differentiated methods, such as words, definitions, pictures, sentences using the words in context, relatable examples. In my classroom, I teach vocabulary using differentiated methods, such as words, definitions, pictures, sentences using the words in context, relatable examples. This way, I address language form and its function. How do you address the relationship between verbal and written expression in your classroom? - In order to address the relationship between written and verbal expression, I use a range of differentiated teaching techniques, such as reading aloud, modeling, collaborative reading, videos, and visual aids. What strategies do you implement to support the various language needs of ELLs? - Some of the strategies used to meet the diverse language needs of English Language Learners (ELLs) include bilingual support using apps such as Google Translate and ABCya, bilingual dictionaries, modeling, oral readings, manipulatives, identification, visuals, charts, everyday situations, videos, and cultural exchange. How do you provide ELLs with content area instruction that meets grade level expectations, while supporting their English language development?
- I support ELLs' English language development by dividing content, scaffolding, and then building upon what they know already and comprehension. I also provide ELLs with content-based instruction that meets grade level standards. How would you advise teachers in the classroom to support their English Language Learners? - I would advise classroom teachers to use a variety of strategies to support their English Language Learners (ELLs), including dividing videos, images, pairing with peers, and tap into what students already know to address students' needs. Which is the most difficult task you have when assisting ELLs? - Working with ELLs presents me with a few obstacles, including time constraints and a lack of family support because of cultural differences. Part 2: Plan and Reflect I had the honor of interviewing my mentor teacher, Melissa Charley. She provided me with valuable insight into how to support English Language Learners. She pulls her students out every day to work on improving their language skills. She utilizes a number of programs and strategies to help her students. Ms. Charley acknowledged during our interview that she finds it challenging to find the time necessary to make sure each of her students receives the support and accommodations they need, but she still manages to complete everything. Ms. Charley uses a range of techniques to accommodate the different languages spoken by ELLs. She mentioned using some programs, such as Google Translate and ABCya. During the tour of her classroom,

she demonstrated to me how she supported her students' language development by using labels and pictures throughout the classroom. Students' academic vocabulary can be improved by using a "word wall," which is a visual list of words intended to aid in the learning of academic terms. One thing that really stood out to me during the interview was her allowance of peer reading, which boosts students' confidence and encourages and develops collaboration among the learners. Some of the strategies I will use to support ELLs as I get ready to work with a group of students during my field experience include scaffolding the material for my students and making sure I use plenty of visual aids to help my students. My goal in my classroom is to provide each student with the support they need to successfully complete each academic challenge and to learn new approaches to teaching. By learning different methods of instruction, I will be able to accomplish my goal.
