TEDTALKS Language and Communication 1. What is the speaker/author arguing in this talk (think about larger ideas and overall message?) Martin Hilpert is the speaker/author arguing in this talk. Jamila Lyiscott is the speaker/author arguing in this talk. 2 . What are the major points they are making? The major points would be about how it revolves around the nature and systems of languages with the rules that underlies in human communication. The major points would be highlighting the importance of embracing and valuing all aspects of language and linguistic diversity. 3. Which preconceptions are they addressing? They are addressing on the importance of valuing all the languages to help emphasize the cultural aspects in language learning. They are addressing on challenging the preconceived biases that’s associated with the English language learning and cultural diversity. 4. What assumptions, and/or stereotypes are being discussed in these talks? Mostly on promoting inclusivity, cultural understanding, and appreciation for linguistic diversity to address for assumptions and stereotypes. On aim to challenge biases, promote inclusive learning environments and encourage an approach to the English language. 5. How does each of these address assumptions about language? It addresses by providing evidence and examples that challenge these assumptions, meaning the speaker emphasize the dynamic nature of language and linguistic resources.
It addresses on how the talk challenges to develop and embrace that language is an idea or tool for connection with others. My observation on the talks "3 Ways to Speak English" and "What Makes a Language a Language" by TED talks shows interest on different aspects of language and the factors that define a language. Meaning, when the one focuses on strategies to improve English speaking skills, the other delves into defining a language and its unique characteristics. These TED talks provide a valuable insight into language learning strategies and the fundamental components. Both of these videos/talks highlight the importance of engagement, practice, and understanding the structural elements that make up a language. My questions for these talks would be “What are three different methods suggested to improve language fluency” in 3 Ways to Speak English, and “What are the key criteria that defines a system of communication as a language” in What make a language a language.
