ASA1 Task 1 Heidi Roundy
A. Identify 3 language proficiency tests.
1. WIDA Screener Online - https://wida.wisc.edu/assess/screener/online
WIDA stands for World-class Instructional Design and Assessment. The WIDA Screener is used, for grades 1-12, to assess if a student is eligible for language services. When a student is new to the state and indicate that another language is spoken in the home, they will be given this assessment. In Utah it is given within 30 days at the start of the school year or 10 days if a student enters during the school year. The test is divided into 4 parts to assess reading (15min), listening (15 min), speaking (25 min) and writing (25 min). The reading and listening portions are automatically scored but the speaking and writing portions are scored by someone locally who is trained and certified. An overall composite score is calculated from 15% listening, 15% speaking, 35% reading and 35% writing. If the overall is less than or equal to 4.9 the student should get ELL services.
The scores are categorized to describe where a student is at in their English abilities. They are
called Entering, Emerging, Developing, Expanding, Bridging, and Reaching. (WIDA,n.d.) This helps guide educators in planning how to differentiate instruction for each student.
A2: 2 WIDA Screener Online sample questions.
Reading – Students see a picture and a sentence or two describing what is happening. Then they read and answer multiple choice questions about what they have read. (WIDA, n.d.)
Reading picture sample. (WIDA, n.d.)
ASA1 Task 1 Heidi Roundy
Writing – Students see a picture of a scene where many things are happening. They are asked questions like “What is happening I the picture? Write 1 sentence.” They will be asked to write other things about the picture.
A3: Procedures for WIDA Screener Online
The Screener is an individual test given only to new students who have indicated a language other than English is spoken in the home. There is no reason to study as it is for evaluation of where they are in their English proficiency. Those who administer this test need to complete the WIDA training and should view the webinar to help them give the test. They should make sure that all necessary materials and devices (computers, headsets) are available and functioning properly. Prior to testing the student should be added and registered with WIDA. The important thing is to provide a stress free testing environment.
2. WIDA Access Online (will be updated for the 25-26 school year) - https://wida.wisc.edu/assess/access
WIDA Access is a yearly assessment used to measure progress in language development, the effectiveness of the ELL program in the school and to make decisions and/or changes in the placements. It is usually administered at the same time for the students in the same Writing question sample. (WIDA, n.d.)

school. The 4 domains of language are tested more in depth: reading (60 min), listening (65 min), speaking (50 min) and writing (90 min). Access is an adaptive format where subsequent questions are based on the previous answers given. There are accommodation and accessibility features to provide options for immigrant or refugee students.
A2. 2 WIDA Access Online sample questions
Listening – This portion requires headphones for hearing the narrator. The students are shown a picture and listen to an introduction of the topic it covers. On the next screen they see other pictures associated with the topic. They listen to more information and a question about what they heard. They mark the correct response from the choices given. Speaking – The speaking portion requires the use of a microphone/headset. The students are shown a picture Listening First picture question sample. (WIDA, n.d.)
Listening Second picture and question sample. (WIDA, n.d.)

covering activities or on certain topics. They are asked to explain or talk about things that pertain to the picture. A3: Procedures for WIDA Access Online
Test administrators should set up accounts and complete training prior to testing. They should make sure that all necessary materials and devices are available and functioning properly. Prior to testing the student should be added and registered with WIDA. The most important thing is to provide a stress free testing environment.
Because WIDA Access is a test of progression in the ELL program it is suggested that the students become familiar with how the platform works and to practice sample questions. This will help them be more comfortable on test day. They should be encouraged to have a positive mindset, sleep, and eat well before test day.
3. TOEFL Junior Standard Test- https://www.ets.org/toefl.html
TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign language, The TOEFL Junior test is for assessing English-language proficiency that students will use while in school. It focuses on the academic and social aspects of language for students 11 years and older. The result of this test allows educators to make decisions about placement and progress and provide Lexile Speaking picture and question sample. (WIDA, n.d.)

scores so books can be picked that match the students reading level. The Junior Standard test assesses reading comprehension (50 min), listening comprehension (40 min), and language form and meaning or grammar (25 min). There are writing and reading tests, but they are separate products. The test is scored by local ETS centers and converted to a standard scale of
200-300 points for each section, and 600-900 for an overall score.
A2: Sample questions
Listening Comprehension - Students will hear an audio recording about a topic and then they will hear a question. They will need to be able to read the choices for the answer to the question.
Language Form and Meaning – The questions are set up with multiple choice boxes to select the correct word or phrase to complete the statement.

Reading Comprehension – The students are given a scenario to read and a few multiple choice questions to answer about the reading. A3: Procedures for TOEFL Junior Language Form and Meaning question sample. (TOEFL, n.d.)

ASA1 Task 1 Heidi Roundy
There is an online handbook for test takers so they can be prepared and know what to expect. The test administrator should be familiar with the information in this handbook. It covers the setup of a class and the rules. They should have the required materials, seating arrangements and instructions ready. At the end of testing all materials should be collected by the administrator including any scratch paper that was given to the student.
A1: Compare and contrast the three assessments.
The 3 tests are all similar in that they are used to evaluate a person’s English proficiency. They can all be used to assess the need of a placement in English Language Learning services and guide educators in knowing where they need to differentiate learning for a student. They
are all online tests and can be easily scored. They can benefit students and teachers by providing data to help guide instruction and assistance for teaching and improving English proficiency. Both programs offer resources for after testing to assist teachers in providing the correct level of support and instruction for their students. WIDA has standards alignment and
“Can do” statements for the different levels. (WIDA, n.d.) TOEFL gives recommendations to guide instruction. They also have a program that can be subscribed to for self-paced learning activities. (TOEFL, n.d.)
They all differ from each other in many ways. Both WIDA tests are for 1

th
grade students and cover the same domains of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The TOEFL Junior test is for ages 11+ and covers listening, reading, and language form or grammar. The speaking and writing options are offered separately. The WIDA tests have questions that follow similar formats, with pictures, instructions, multiple choice, writing, and speaking. TOEFL questions are multiple choice, require the student to be able to read and I did not see

any graphics or pictures. The WIDA tests scores are converted to 6 levels that explain the level and things that students in each level can do. TOEFL does not appear to have scaffolding
for students who may not be able to read while the WIDA tests use pictures to make it possible for low readers to still show listening and speaking skills without needing to be good
at reading.
