Writing Assignment 1 M01
Crime control is one of the more important things talked about models, it’s a perspective
that emphasizes the efficient arrest and conviction of criminal offenders. This is used to help
enforce laws and maintain public order as well as protect others from injustice. According to
Frank Schmalleger, “The crime-control model was first brought to the attention of the academic
community in Stanford University law professor Herbert Packer’s cogent analysis of the state of
criminal justice in the late 1960s,”(Schmalleger, 2019 p.14). However some people believe it to
be more conservative and severe than others.
Shanell Sanchez further elaborated her opinion on Crime Control by stating “In order to
protect society and make sure individuals feel free from the threat of crime, the crime control
model would advocate for swift and severe punishment for offenders.”(Sanchez,2019). She goes
on to equate the crime control model as one used as a straight point to get immediate punishment
without any fair trials because there is immediate proof. However, it is different with the due
process model. The due process is a more fair chance kind of model.
For due process model it is mainly based on individual rights to make sure innocent
people are not convicted of crimes(Schmalleger, 2019 p.14). For this to work they need to
analyze all evidence and consider the facts of the individual. There is a statement that claims that
the due process model is a fundamental part of American criminal justice(Schmalleger, 2019). I
believe that in this day in age we live in a due process model as we still take the time to run a fair
trial and use legal practices to be held more accountable.
Multiculturism is a society that has more than one culture with their own set of norms,
values, and behaviors. It can range from racial and ethnic heritages, diverse religions,
incongruous values, disparate traditions, and distinct language but I believe the biggest impact

was diverse religions. For while certain beliefs were claimed to be different or considered
witchcraft which led to many massacres or isolation simply because they didn’t have the same
belief styles as the others. So, this has come a very long and very impactful way from what it
once was.
