Fordham University: Academic Freedom
Institution Overview
Fordham University is a Jesuit university, located in New York.
It was founded in the
nineteenth century.
The institution has three campuses.
Rose Hill in the Bronx, Lincoln Center
in Manhattan, and Harrison, in Westchester.
Fordham University offers a combined 9 schools in
their undergraduate and graduate programs.
Those schools include Fordham Law School.
Fordham is a prestigious university that incorporates Jesuit teachings, within their education
(University, n.d.-a).
Between the nine schools, Fordham’s student population reaches close to 17,000.
Almost
ten thousand undergraduates and about seven thousand graduate and professional scholars.
In
terms of their faculty, Fordham employs close to 750 faculty members.
Over 50 percent are
tenured.
They are classified as a doctoral university due to the level of research activity
(University, n.d.-c).
Academic Freedom Policy
Fordham’s academic freedom policy comes under Article Four, entitled
Policies
and
Procedures for Faculty
, Chapter Four.
The policy encourages faculty members the “full
freedom of teaching, discussing, research and publication and to protect any member of the
instructional staff, whether tenured or no-tenured” (University, n.d.-b).
Those who are employed
at the institution are given such freedoms to explore freely, ways to educate their scholars,
without repercussions from both internal and external organizations or entities.
Analysis
As stated above, Fordham’s academic freedom policy can be found in Article Four of
Chapter Four.
In Appendix I, of the policy you can find further information, which goes into a
3
more in-depth look at the policy.
The policy grants faculty freedoms, but those freedoms have
limitations.
While the policy follows the freedom of teaching, research, and publication, it does
not fully come under the First Amendment: Freedom of Speech.
The educator will be protected;
however, they must be aware of how they present their teaching material and make sure that
whatever they teach needs to be within the boundaries of their subject matter (University, n.d.-d).
