My Social Change Project looked at child removal within the welfare system and how compounding evidence that in some cases removal may not be in the child's best interest and perhaps more preventative services can be put into place (Trivedi, 2019). Allowing children to have a voice in their lives aligns with the social worker's values, dignity, and worth of a person (NASW, 2021).
The proposal for advocacy and recommendation for policy alternatives came from my ethical worldview, which is supported by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), Social workers should engage in social and political action that seeks to ensure that all people have equal access to the resources, employment, services, and opportunities they require to meet their basic human needs and to develop fully. Social workers should be aware of the impact of the political arena on practice and should advocate for changes in policy and legislation to improve social conditions to meet basic human needs and promote social justice. ( NASW,2021) My policy alternative provides research on how foster care workers and Child Protection Services (CPS) are failing to adequately protect children and families and provide positive outcomes for the family unit. Ceasing to discontinue placing children in hotels and providing services to support education, mental health, physical health, and kinship placement supports within 48-72 hours of being placed in care will enable children to thrive.
Upon reflection, I could do more opposition research on issues that one may use to oppose my new policy. A better understanding of how money is allocated will give me a more substantial counter-argument as to why more funding is needed. Using resources such as child tax credits to
reduce child poverty (Collyer,2023) would be an excellent rebuttal to assist my alternative policy. Collyer, S., Hardy, B., & Wimer, C. (2023, March 1). The antipoverty effects of the expanded child tax
