BIP Step- FCT Scenarios
For each- tell me how you would use FCT to help this student. A paragraph or two response. 1. John is a 2-year-old boy with ASD, he engages in aggressive behavior such as, spitting, hit-
ting, kicking or hair pulling and the behavior may occur in an episode (can last up to 20 min-
utes). John seems to engage in the behavior most often during structured teacher directed tasks. When we remove him from the task the behavior subsides. When we resume the task the behav-
ior begins again. We hae determined this behavior occurs to escape the task. RESPONSE: John is a young toddler that is engaging in aggressive behavior when a task is di-
rected by the teacher. When the task is removed, John aggressive behavior decreases. John be-
comes aggressive again when the task starts. We must replace the aggressive behavior with a positive behavior. FCT can be used by the teacher using gestures to communicate with John. The teacher can encourage John with VP’s, appreciation and build a star reward system where every time he sits quietly for tasks, a star will be added to the chart. The hope is that John will be motivated by the positive reinforcement and will start showing a change in behavior (an end to aggressive behavior). 2. Jamie is a 12.5 year-old boy with a Dx of PDD- NOS, he engages in behaviors such as throw-
ing his materials to the floor. I notice this occurs often when I am engaged with my own materi-
als or speaking with his Mom. We have determined through an FBA that this behavior occurs for
attention. RESPONSE:
Jamie is almost a teenager with PDD and he throws things around the room for attention as a function of this behavior. The extinction strategy would be appropriate here where there is no attention directed to undesired behaviors (such as throwing materials to the floor). Once the extinction phase becomes functional and Jamie ceases from the undesired behavior, we can use FCT to teach Jamie an alternative communication skill that will allow him to get the de-
sired attention he is seeking. FCT will be used to help Jamie politely ask for something during class activities and to immediately reinforce it with attention/verbal praise.
3. Jack is a 16 year-old boy with a Dx of Autism, he engages in behaviors such as crying and screaming. I notice that he seems to engage in the behavior most often when he or another stu-
dent are on the computer. He has difficulty waiting his turn and I notice that when he is waiting to use the computer and begins to scream, the other students back away and let him use the com-
puter. This behavior is increasing and occurs now at lunch time as well. It has been determined that this behavior is maintained by access to tangible items. RESPONSE
: An FCT that is appropriate in this case is picture board which is a sheet of sym-
bols, pictures, that a child will learn to point and to communicate with instructors, teachers around him. So when Jack is upset and frustrated, the picture board will enable him to display what he’s feeling and/or display what he wants. Secondly, a self-monitoring strategy would be appropriate in this case as well.
