What Do You Think? Tracey Evans CJ-112: Intro to Criminal Justice Professor Beverly Tims January 23 rd , 2024
2 The four purposes of punishment are rehabilitation, incapacitation, retribution, and deterrence. The most important purpose of punishment in my opinion is rehabilitation. Rehabilitation is the most essential since it helps convicts acclimate to society. That should be the first goal to prevent future crimes. Incapacitation would follow next since it enables offenders to get detached from society and prevents a criminal from breaking the law. The definition is rendering someone as unable to act or move about, either through incarceration or by court order. (Peak & Herold, 2023). Deterrence is rendering someone as unable to act or move about, either through incarceration or by court order. (Peak & Herold, 2023). Retribution and deterrence is ranked lower, but they are equally vital. We must launch community-based programs that increase people's access to mental health care and assistance. Being able to observe people who have been rehabilitated may also assist. It might also help them see where they might end up if they don't adjust their conduct. The least important purpose of punishment is retribution. While appreciating the need of justice for victims and their communities, emphasizing retribution may create a cycle of vengeance and impede the chance of recovery. I disagree with capital punishment because I do not believe in taking a life from someone I do not even know. At the end of the day, it should not be an option. The death penalty is a sensitive subject however, retribution is based on a "you take a life; I take your life" mindset. I feel that capital punishment is more closely aligned with retribution than any other purpose of punishment. I don’t think it affects rehabilitation. I feel the death penalty is difficult to figure out how it connects with each purpose of punishment. Overall, analyzing the purposes of punishment and their connection to capital punishment helps shape a more comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system.
