The three articles focus on the "Oxford School Shooting” that was done by a teenager and
left the nation with shock and horror. The case of the Oxford High School shooting and the
subsequent charges against the shooter's parents raises complex and sensitive issues surrounding
parental responsibility and the legal consequences of a tragedy like this. As a result, there are
ongoing proceedings surrounding the Oxford High School shooting with Ethan Crumbley being
involved as the alleged shooter, and it has become a matter of significant public attention and
significant concern. In this regard, this essay seeks to react to different articles focusing on the
shooting case and the legal proceedings reflecting on parental neglect in the context of school
shootings.
After reading the article “Oxford High School Shooting: New Evidence Reveals James,
Jennifer Crumbley’s ‘Consciousness of Guilt, ’’ I have learned so many things in the criminology
field and parents' role in perpetuating criminal activities to their kids. I think Ethan expressing
her fear that he might turn the gun to himself raises questions on how the parents respond to red
flags. Additionally, the fact that the parents declined to take him home after school is a narrative
of negligence. I also feel that Crumbley's appeal to the Michigan Supreme Court to have charges
dismissed raises crucial ethical and legal questions. However, I was amazed by the reasoning of
the defence attorneys, who postulated that the actions of the parents may be deemed as bad
parenting, but it is not the direct cause of death; thus, the prosecution insists on the parents'

accountability for failing to prevent their son's access to a deadly weapon. On a similar note, the
article published early this year also focuses on the parents fighting manslaughter charges in the
court of appeal, indicating that such problems exist in society.
The quality of the article
“
Oxford High School Shooter’s Parents Fight Manslaughter
Charges in Appeals Court.”
It left me happy and satisfied because I never expected it to look at
the matter from this perspective. In my opinion, the subsequent charges against the shooter's
parents raise complex and sensitive issues surrounding parental responsibility and the legal
consequences of a tragedy like this. The journal entry from an accused shooter, Crumbley,
depicts the struggles he encountered with mental health issues, raising a question of parental
responsibility in addressing their child's mental health. However, I want to challenge the article
as it could have explored the challenges parents encounter in managing mental health in their
children and how the legal system and society at large should respond to such challenges. In
addition, based on the arguments of the defence, there is a question about the extent to which
parents can be held accountable for the actions of their children and the challenges of drawing
legal boundaries in such cases. Ultimately, the following article has determined that Crumbley
will remain in Oakland County jail as ordered by the court.
In the article “Ethan Crumbley to Remain in Oakland County Jail, next Hearing on
Sentencing Delayed.” The writer is trying to depict the routine nature of the monthly reviews
because the hearing lasted less than five minutes, and Crumbley was 16. Therefore, because of
his status as a minor, his placement in jail needs regular evaluation by a judge. Furthermore, I
was impressed with the noteworthy use of virtual platforms for these hearings, highlighting the
modern approach to legal proceedings and the adjustments made in response to various
circumstances. However, the absence of Crumbley during the hearing, conducted via Zoom,

raises questions about his physical presence in court and the implications of holding virtual
proceedings for such sensitive cases. Lastly, the delayed sentencing hearing adds to the case's
complexity, leaving room for speculation about the reasons behind the postponement.
In sum, this essay submits that the Crumbley school shooting is evidence of the potential
consequences of parental negligence and the importance of identifying and addressing mental
issues at an early stage. According to the details presented in court, the warning signs were either
unaddressed or ignored. As the legal proceedings unfold, individuals and society are left to
grapple with the broader implications of this case, contemplating the role of parents, schools, and
the legal system in preventing such devastating events.
