Writing Assignment Part 2: Interest Groups
Mission and Goals
of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC)
Compared Senator Jane Smith, a fictitious member of Congress, with the political values
and legislative aims of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), a prominent LGBTQ advocacy
organization. This comparison served to assess the degree to which an interest group and a
lawmaker are in agreement as well as to comprehend the prospective impact of the interest group
on the legislator's decisions (Kaplan & Berkley, 2021). The core purpose of HRC is to promote
LGBTQ rights, including matters like healthcare access, marriage equality, and
nondiscrimination. These objectives are reinforced by Senator Smith's legislative record, which
demonstrates how passionately she has backed legislation that advances LGBTQ rights. There is
congruence between the goals of HRC and Senator Smith's legislative agenda as seen by this
alignment (Kaplan & Berkley, 2021).
This similarity is further shown by the Human Rights Campaign's endorsement of
Senator Smith, demonstrating that their objectives are similar. Furthermore, OpenSecrets.org
discloses that HRC has given Senator Smith campaign funds (McEwan & Smith, 2022). This
financial backing raises the possibility that the interest organization was involved in Senator
Smith's campaign and helped her win the election. The reference to HRC's legislative scorecard
also emphasizes how interest groups assess and rank MPs according to their support for
particular topics. In order to help voters and the general public understand where politicians
stand on important issues, this scorecard offers a clear rating of how well legislators fit with the
group's objectives (McEwan & Smith, 2022).

The transferable abilities gained from finishing this assignment. The project called for a
variety of abilities, including self-discipline, social responsibility, critical analysis, and effective
communication. By upholding ethical conduct during the research process, maintaining time
management to fulfill project deadlines, and paying attention to detail in providing correct
information, individuals displayed personal responsibility. By understanding the cultural and
societal norms that have an influence on these issues and by being aware of the worldwide
LGBTQ rights challenges, social responsibility has been fostered. Social responsibility also
required civic involvement and an understanding of many points of view. Critical thinking
abilities were used to identify patterns and underlying principles in politicians' behavior, examine
how legislative priorities aligned with interest group aims, and collect relevant data and
resources for study. The ability to successfully condense information, express concepts
succinctly in writing, and employ technical writing techniques to make sure the text was
understandable all depended on good communication.
Finding accurate and current information on particular lawmakers and their connections
to interest groups may have been the most difficult part of our endeavor because this information
might change over time. Strong research, analytical, and communication abilities were
demonstrated in this assignment, but there is always space for development. One might improve
their awareness of the legislative landscape by developing their time management skills and
broadening the scope of their study to encompass a wider spectrum of politicians and interest
groups.
