1. Two LMS: Google Classroom: This LMS is designed by Google that fosters effective communication and collaboration between educators and students. The purpose of GC is to create assignments, upload course materials, communicate/collaborate for educators/students, and share learning resources. It is user friendly and works cohesively with Google Mail, Google Drive, etc. K-12 often adopts this LMS because it is student friendly. Canvas LMS Solutions: This LMS is built and made for institutions and educators to manage online learning, create and present online learning materials, and foster student engagement in courses and learning. This software is available for K-12 as well as higher education. 2. Data: Google Classroom: Personally identifiable information (PII) is collected. Main page of GC shows all classes/courses educator offers or is charge of.
Educators can digitally organize, distribute, collect assignments and course materials. Educators can post assignments to multiple classes, modify/reuse courses/assignments from prior classes/years. Educators can communicate with students about their classwork. They can leave announcements/comments on the class stream, use a private chat on specific assignments to offer support or answer questions. Educators can give students feedback and grades on assignments. They can return student work digitally, leave comments, grade by points. For students K-12, families can have access to student work/feedback/grades as well. Canvas: Instructors can view and track student activity within the course. Instructors can view the activity of when students view a page, participate in the course such as viewing content or commenting on a discussion post. Instructors can view when students submitted an assignment (on time, late, early, or never submitted). Instructors can view student grades, their progress throughout the course through a box and whisker plot. Instructors can view student analytics (page view, participations, assignments, and current score) for all students in each course. 4. My organization could use learning analytics from Google Classroom to optimize learning by viewing the progress and grades of each student for a course. Finding grade trends, common missed assignments/questions can provide insight and help develop a plan to close learning gaps. For example, if students are repeatedly missing the same question or not progressing on an assignment, it can let the educator know to reteach the lesson, revisit a concept, or revise the assignment. In addition, the feature of parent/family access to support student learning and progress holds students accountable and the educator, family, and student can all work together to ensure student engagement and learning.
