The state is about to consider using a common set of standards and curriculum. All schools
would have to use this set of standards regardless of other factors. The stakeholders involved and
relevant to the issue, issues in K-12 education, are the community at large and the teachers.
Since serving on the committee to impact legislation, I am tasked with taking a stand on whether
using a set of standards across the state will affect all students more positively or more
negatively.
One problem with having a set of standards that must be used in all schools and classrooms is
that it does not necessarily address the needs of all students. This is especially relevant for
students with disabilities and English language learners. This will heavily impact the students
and the community at large. Depending on where the student school is located, if it is in a rural
area, it is more likely that these standards will be used for the majority of students of color. They
are also more likely to have a disability or be an English language learner. Equity and racial
inequality will need to be addressed heavily (Greene, 2020).
Another problem with the issue is that the standards would need to be implemented with the
teachers. The new standards will come with professional development to address how to
implement the standards. Then more training will likely be necessary to show teachers how to
scaffold and modify these standards. Teachers will also likely need more support teachers in the
classroom to aid in building the missing skills of students with disabilities and English language
learners.
Questioning that will help people gain insight into the issue include: Will all students follow the
same curriculum, even students with disabilities and English language learners, or will teachers
have access to a modified curriculum? Will all students be required to take the same state
assessments? Will there be a modified set of standards that are aligned with the new state
standards?
Obtaining the answers to these questions will include finding a perspective from each
stakeholder that is backed up by data (Laureate Education, 2014a). Teachers should and give
input on this issue because it can impact them in many ways. These ways include can include
state testing being high stakes and negatively impacting student scores and teacher assessment
scores. The community at large could be negatively impacted because there has not been
adequate enough time to test common core effectiveness (Laureate Education, 2014b).

My position on case study 3 is that equity and racial inequality will be at the forefront if a
universal set of standards are used for every student (Greene, 2020).
The stakeholders, the
community as a whole and the teachers, would be greatly affected in a negative manner. In my
experience, having a set standards for all students does not address the needs of all students. I
have used a curriculum for students in the self contained setting and a different curriculum for
general education students. Both curriculum/standards do build on one another.
Using a new universal set of standards can be ineffective if studies and data is not collected on
the effects of the standards on students with different needs. Another issue is the load on
teachers. Teachers will have to adopt new standards with or without professional development
and training. Teachers will also need to be trained on how to modify for students with special
education services and/or English language learners. These students, according to their
individual
accomodations
, will need special attention paid to these standards.
Perspective from all stakeholders will be needed to collect a comprehensive look at the pros
and cons of using a universal set of standards
(Laureate Education, 2014)
. Though the main
stakeholders at risk will be the community at large.
