Scenario one:
A.
Short term solutions for the displacement of employees would depend heavily on the resources available to the company. If we have other offices available, temporarily having
our employees work there might lead to crowded conditions but would ensure that work gets done. We could also allow for work from home, utilizing any undamaged workstations we have available. Another option would be temporarily leasing another office space or utilizing any rooms that survived the deluge of water unscathed. B.
Short term solutions for the processes and hardware that have been affected by the incident would involve visual confirmation of the damage and removing any workstations that haven’t been damaged. Having a running inventory of equipment such as laptops or portable devices that could be brought in would be vital in getting business running as normal. The back ups should be checked and verified that they are recent. C.
The primary failover solution I would recommend would be ensuring that the information
on the servers and data that is vital to the company is regularly backed up and protected off site. This could be in the cloud or at another location, but regularly backing up the data. I would suggest cloud based for several reasons. Namely, the pricing tends to scale based on the amount of data needing to be stored. Given the amount of damage we are now having to repair, I understand that cost is an important factor at the moment.
D.
In relation to business continuity the most important tenet of the CIA triad is availability. Without the data available, we have no business to continue. Following this, I would say that confidentiality is second most important. Protecting our customer’s data (and our own) is vital to maintaining the business. Integrity is obviously important but falls behind
compared to the other two tenets. Scenario two:
A.
Short term solutions for the displacement of the employee would be simply to provide them with another workstation. Assuming the mysterious snowman hasn’t spread, no other workstation should be infected and as long as the employee doesn’t plug their compromised USB into more computers, they should be able to continue as normal.
B.
The short-term solutions for the hardware is to disconnect it completely from the network
and begin troubleshooting. Unless the worker had data solely available on the device, they should be able to continue as normal at another workstation. C.
A failover solution for this scenario would be to ensure that the workstations are regularly
backed up and, thus, can be easily retrieved. This would allow for the workstation to be rolled back to a previous version. I would also set about disabling USB drives unless they
were absolutely needed for work. The primary need for this solution would simply be time. Time to set up the back ups and establish a schedule for them.
D.
I would rank the tenets of the CIA triad for this scenario as: Integrity, Confidentiality and Availability. By potentially getting the system infected with a virus the integrity of the data has been put at risk and should be the primary concern. Making sure the data remains confidential is second as we do not (currently) know what damage the potential virus has done. Availability is final as the worker can do their job from another workstation and maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of the data is far more important.
