Part One: Sustainable Practices
1.
The scenario I selected for my project is scenario 1: Business. The McBurrow company can contribute to many harms to the environment, one of which includes water pollution. When mining occurs at their sites, it can have a huge impact on the surrounding surface and groundwater. Contamination happens when chemicals are released, spilled, or leaked into water lines, streams, river, and any other bodies of water close by. Furthermore, when mining occurs it pollutes the
water with toxins and wastes which leads to damages to the marine ecosystems. When the ecosystem is damaged or disturbed, it destroys the balance and it affect those who live in it.
2.
The way that resources are now used in mining, especially when considering the operations of McBurrow Mining, has multiple negative effects on the environment. Some of which includes land degradation, water pollution, biodiversity loss and depletion to natural resources. Mining activities causes land degradation because the process of mining usually includes disturbing the soil and rock, which leads to loss of fertility in that area, soil erosion and landscape changes. Secondly, mining plays a huge role in water pollution because it releases toxin and chemicals into the surrounding bodies of water which also affect marine organism and the ecosystem. Thirdly, the process of mining usually involves the extraction of rare earth minerals (REMs) from the earth. This action leads to damages to natural resources which are finite and non-renewable. Lastly, mining plays a big part in biodiversity loss because it destroys habitats and can lead to extinction of species and their homes. In summary, the case study provides a great
example of how to reduce these impacts by following three tenets of sustainable mining by minimizing waste, reducing disturbances of the environment and aiding land recovery. Moreover, as the director it is my duty to ensure that these practices are implemented and adhered to by each employee to reduce the impact McBurrow’s mining has on the environment and to preserve and protect the natural
resources.
3.
The set of beliefs and values that a group holds can drastically affect their behavior towards the environmental systems. Some of the impacts that human ideology has includes political ideologies, environmental ethics, and cultural beliefs. Cultural beliefs can affect the environmental behavior since some traditions
and cultures view the world different. Cultural diversity plays a huge role in how humans view and think about environmental systems. Some cultures believe in promoting nature and protecting the environment and its natural resources while other may not care about how their actions affects the environment. Another human
ideology that affects the environment is environmental ethics. What humans believe in often dictates the ethical framework in which they operate. If a human prioritizes being environmentally sustainable then they will always try to practice sustainability and conservation, while on the other hand others may not be environmentally sustainable but will practice economic growth instead. Finally, political ideologies play a huge part in environmental systems. In politics they emphasize on rights and freedom which can lead to human resistance against following the rules and regulations that governs the environment.
The McBurrow company protects the environment by mining only rare earth minerals (REM). It is their belief that if they only mine (REM) then the environments natural resources can thrive, and it will create a balance in the environment making it more sustainable.
4.
Cultural biases are how human judge phenomena based on their cultural beliefs. This kind of bias plays a huge role in global sustainability. The role of cultural bias in global sustainability includes perception of sustainability since different cultures have different views and beliefs. Some may prioritize economic growth while others value environmental conservations. Another bias is their approach to problem-solving. Different cultures have different strategies they use to solve sustainability issues and valued traditional knowledge that are rooted in cultural practices. The McBurrow company uses a cultural exchange program that allows them to cross train their employees on their family traditions that they want them to
practice while working with the company. Part Two: Profile
1.
Sustainability is the way in which one conserve and contributes to the continuous
process overtime. The value of sustainability practices on human helps in improving the quality of life, creating stronger community bonds and to provide hope for future generations. The long-term benefits of sustainable practices for people include bettering living standards, strengthening ties within communities, and inspiring optimism for future generations. The short-term benefits include meeting human needs and providing a better, safer, and more productive environment for both the present and the future generations. Furthermore, by

being aware of how their lifestyle choices will affect the environment in which they live, they will be able to make more informed judgments that won't compromise the ability of future generations to meet their own requirements. Similarly, environmental sustainability is crucial for both the current and coming generations. Water, clean air, and wildlife are.
2.
The relationship between human equity and sustainable systems is that both requires a holistic system working together to function. Human equity is how one perceives a person holistically rather than viewing their physical features and their cultural upbringings. In scenario 1 the McBurrow family hired 250 workers from all over regardless of their cultural backgrounds and what they look like, and they all worked together to mine and develop the company over the last decade. Similarly, sustainable systems are systems that work together to improve the environment and its natural resources to keep it in a healthy and safe
condition for future generations. The McBurrow Family believed in sustainable mining to create a balance which helps to preserve the earth’s natural resources where one can live and thrive in their environment. Additionally, this method has helped to minimize wastes and reduces disturbances to the environment which preserves it for future use.
3.
The conflict resolution used in this scenario are the mandatory policies and regulations implemented aimed to ensure minerals and resources are mined sustainably. The implementation of these policies is to make sure that companies are practicing sustainability practices that will promote a safer environment. Also, there are consequences if regulations are not followed and if companies
decide to bend the rules. Having these policies in place allows company to practice sustainability to help the environment thrive and to protect the natural resources for our future generations.
4.
A society's values and ideas are frequently imposed via its cultural systems. The way a society interacts with its surroundings can be significantly impacted by these values and beliefs. Certain cultures, for instance, could place a high importance on conservation and hold beliefs that support eco-friendly behaviors. The cultural system in the selected scenario is family. The McBurrow company is a family mining company that has been own and operated by members of the McBurrow family for over a decade. Even though they hired employee outside of the family, the role of culture ensured that the family traditions were practiced and upheld by each worker. They were trained to use the family strategies to keep the company in line with the core beliefs and values of the McBurrow family to keep the company running the same way great granddad did when he started it years ago.
Part Three: Actionable Steps
1.
Sustainability improvement is needed because this will ensure that sustainable measures are put in place to enhance environment for the present and future generation. While the McBurrow company is mining only natural resources, there are other important aspects of sustainability that need to be considered. I do believe that economically the McBurrow needs to improve working on practicing more economically sustainable practices that will create a healthier environment. Practicing
this will help to reduce environmental damages and minimize resource consumption
but also it will reduce health risk for humans. The benefits of improving this sustainability practice are that they will be reducing health risks, increase revenue, protecting the environment and its natural resources, reduce waste and environmental damages.
2.
The importance of management and stakeholders is to guide the organization by introducing protocols, provide and analyze important information that teaches about future programs that will help the organization to manage their risks and make strategic decisions that will help the organization thrive and be successful. Gaining insight into these viewpoints can help enhance sustainability practices
Involve the community in decision-making processes through community engagement. This can promote trust-building and guarantee that choices are made with the inhabitants' best interests in mind. Transparency helps as well. Providing information regarding the procedures, outcomes, and steps taken to guarantee the safety of water should be made available to the public by government and public health officials. Also, policy and regulation to avoid future catastrophes of this nature,
make environmental protection rules and regulations stronger. Finally, health interventions provide impacted residents with both short-term and long-term health interventions, these covers having access to healthcare services and routine health screenings.
3.
Cultural diversity can contribute to the resilience of communities in the face of environmental challenges. Diverse communities are often more adaptable and able to draw on a range of cultural resources to cope with change. Also, Cultural diversity

can foster social cohesion and mutual understanding, which are essential for collective action on sustainability issues. Additional, Ethical Considerations also plays a role in cultural diversity and sustainability. Recognizing cultural diversity can also help to ensure that sustainability initiatives are ethically sound and respect the rights and values of all stakeholders. Cultural diversity allows workers to feel like they belong and that they are important and not judged by how they look, speak, or dressed. It allows balance within the environment and promotes inclusivity, where everyone can share their perspectives. Even though the McBurrow company wanted their family values and beliefs to be practiced it was a diverse workplace where individuals could be creative while contributing to a long-term sustainable development that will affect them and their families.
4.
There are several actionable steps that the McBurrow could take to create a more sustainable environment. Some of these steps are shutting down illegal mining, rehabilitating mining sites, provide employments for surrounding neighborhoods and minimize water, air, and soil pollution at mining sites.
There are a few extra steps that could be taken as it relates to the three pillars. These are:
a.
Economic: Reusing mining waste based on the mineral and chemical compositions McBurrow company can use them for other forms of production such as making bricks. Also, this waste can be used as paint extenders or agroforestry.
b.
Environment: incorporate Eco-Friendly equipment’s and processes in their daily routine that could help to reduce the environmental impact that is created when a site is mined. c.
Society: use lower-impact mining strategies that will reduce health risk to the environment. There is the traditional way to mine (open pit and underground mining) that creates a significant environmental risk and health risk. On the other hand, there are several other alternatives that are available to keep the environment healthier. This includes but is not limited to reducing surface disturbances at mining sites that could reduce soil erosion.
