As you progress through this unit, save any examples of workplace risk management tools and templates that will be useful for Assessment Event 2 and 3. Note down the location of your folder. Record the details of your file name and pathway. Alternatively, you may copy and paste a screen clip. Feedback Your response will demonstrate your ability to get the work done through the effective use of technology and digital systems and tools. Your response will differ depending on the device you use. For example, creating a TAFE folder on your laptop with subfolders for each unit of competency. Activity 1.2: Risk register Go to your organisation or Plan2go and locate a WHS risk register. (Long URL: https://plan2go.nctafe.edu.au/intranet/document-library/?term=whs) Log in using your TAFE credentials to visit Plan2go. 1.
Identify the key components of the WHS risk register. Feedback Your response should list the key components or headings in a risk register that you can access. For example, the Plan2go WHS risk register includes: Hazard identification section with: •
Issue number •
Type of issue •
Date of issue •
Time of issue •
Location of issue •
Hazard/incident category •
Description of the hazards/incident/near miss •
Person/s affected by issue •
Who reported issue
Document title: BSBWHS519_AG_SW_1of1 Page 5 of 15 Resource ID: TBS_20_003_BSBWHS519_AG_SW_1of1 © TAFE NSW 2020 Risk assessment section with: •
Hazard •
Associated risks •
Existing controls •
Likelihood rating •
Consequence rating •
Overall risk rating •
Whether the manager was notified in time required Risk control section with: •
Additional controls required •
Cost of controls •
Whether controls are reasonably practicable •
Person responsible •
Action target date Monitor and review section with: •
Date of review •
Who performed review •
Date action achieved •
Risk trend •
Comments 2.
Evaluate the register for limitations, usefulness and usability. Feedback Your response will depend on the risk register you have analysed to demonstrate your ability to use and navigate through the risk register chosen. Responses may concern the layout of the form, areas missing, legal compliance or consistency with organisational policy and procedures. 3.
How can you use the register to record incident causation? Feedback Your responses will show you can identify those sections of the risk register that help the user to piece the picture together of what happens or happened during a WHS incident. Elements of a risk register that may be relevant include: •
Date and time of incident •
Location of incident •
Description of hazard or incident •
Persons affected •
Existing controls

(Long URL: https://www.safework.nsw.gov.au/resource-library/advertising-and-
campaigns/interactive-safety-hazard-digrams) 1.
Note the common hazards you identified. Feedback You will find the answers on the SafeWork webpage as you progress through the activity. 2.
Identify two ways you could engage the team at work in a hazard hunt. Feedback Note at least two strategies to engage others to support them in their use of WHS risk management tools. Your responses will vary; for example: •
gamification of hazard hunt •
time limits on hunt to motivate actions •
hunt as a team-based activity •
hunt used within a toolbox talk to present information about hazards and associated risks. Activity 1.4: Apply knowledge of risk management tools Locate the Code of Practice: Managing the risks of plant in the workplace 2019 (pdf) from SafeWork NSW. Review Appendix C Hazard Checklist (pages 54-56). (Long URL: https://www.safework.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0019/52156/Managing-the-risks-
of-plant-in-the-workplace-COP.pdf) Identify and describe the strengths and limitations of this workplace inspection checklist. Feedback Demonstrate your interpretation and critical analysis of WHS documents to identify suitable WHS risk management tools. Strengths may include: •
fillable checkboxes •
short so it can be used efficiently •
easy to interpret questions •
could be used as the basis of a workplace-specific template. Limitations may include:

too general and better to have a plant-specific checklist •
need to have a check box against any criteria or difficult to interpret •
needs a section to recommend whether controls are adequate or further action required. Activity 1.5: SWMS Download the Safe Work Australia Safe Work Method Statement for high risk construction work information sheet. (Long URL: https://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/doc/safe-work-
method-statement-high-risk-construction-work-information-sheet) 1.
Note the information that must be included in a SWMS. Feedback Your answer is to demonstrate interpretation and critical analysis of WHS documents to identify suitable WHS risk management tools. SWMS must include: •
the work that is high risk •
hazards relating to high-risk work and the risks to health and safety •
measures to be implemented to control the risks •
how control measures are to be implemented, monitored and reviewed. A more detailed response may include the sections of the template SWMS provided in Appendix A of the information sheet. 2.
Note the guidance on writing the SWMS using structure and language appropriate to the audience. Feedback SWMS should be: •
short •
focussed on describing specific hazards identified for high-risk work and the control measures •
easily understood by workers, including those from non-English speaking backgrounds •
based on workplace-specific risk assessment.

inspections) 1.
Note the steps recommended for conducting an inspection.
Feedback Answers are located in Conducting an Inspection tab of the webpage. During an inspection, identify any unsafe conditions and activities that may cause injury or illness, and figure out how to eliminate or minimise them. Follow these steps: a.
Checklist: Use a checklist to make ensure the inspection is thorough and consistent with previous inspections, and to record inspection. b.
Hazards: Reflect on hazards are associated with the job that is being observed. c.
Observe: Observe how workers perform tasks including following safe work procedures and use of personal protective equipment as required. d.
Ask: Ask workers how they perform their tasks and their health and safety concerns. e.
Record: Record any unsafe actions or conditions that were observed. f.
Consider: Think about tasks that workers may also perform that were not observed. 2.
Record the steps recommended after the inspection.
Feedback Answers are located in After the Inspection tab of the webpage. •
Fix serious hazards or unsafe work practices immediately as this is a legal obligation. •
Prioritise less serious hazards and assign someone to fix/control/treat each one. •
Follow up on any actions that will take time to complete (for example, purchasing new equipment). •
Let workers know what was found during inspections. •
Ensure the health and safety representative or committee has access to, and reviews, the inspection reports and process.

Use the guidance material to develop a four-question questionnaire resource to use to consult workers using a workstation during your inspection. Feedback Your response is to demonstrate you have read guidance material and can interpret and apply it to a particular hazard and associated risks. Four open-ended questions are to be provided. For example: •
What tasks at your workstation leave you feeling sore? •
What tasks are you most afraid of getting hurt from? •
What tasks stop you wanting to come to work? •
How long do you work on the computer at the workstation?
