NRC Assignment
NRC
1.
What is the NRC’s vision statement?
The NRC’s vision statement is that “The NRC is trusted, independent, transparent, and
effective nuclear regulator” (NRC, 2023).
2.
What is the NRC mission?
“The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) was created as an independent agency
by Congress in 1974 to ensure the safe use of radioactive materials for beneficial civilian
purposes while protecting people and the environment. The NRC regulates commercial
nuclear power plants and other uses of nuclear materials, such as in nuclear medicine,
through licensing, inspection and enforcement of its requirements” (NRC, 2023).
3.
The NRC regulatory mission covers what three main area?
1)
Civilian use of radioactive materials
2)
Common defense and security
3)
Protect the environment
4.
How many nuclear power plants are owned and operated by the NRC? (answer is
found in a PowerPoint presentation)
There are no nuclear power plants that are owned and operated by the NRC.
5.
How does the NRC define nuclear medicine?
The NRC defines nuclear medicine as the use of radioactive materials in diagnosis or
therapeutic procedures.
6.
What does the NRC list as what “nuclear medicine isn't?”
The NRC states that nuclear medicine is not any other treatment that uses radiation but
doesn’t involve radioactive materials and isn't regulated by the NRC.
Some examples would be X-ray and Chemotherapy.

NRC Assignment
7.
Under the section “How NRC regulations protect you”, A “medical event” involing
radioactive material occurs if both:
1) The administration of radioactive material to a patient results in a total effective dose
equivalent (TEDE) that exceeds certain specified dose thresholds.
2) This excess dose is caused by factors such as misadministration, malfunction of
equipment, or other deviations from prescribed procedures.
Additionally, if at least one of the following happens: a sealed source leaks, a dose is
administered to the incorrect body part while exceeding 50% or more of the dose that the
region should have received, a 20% dose error, the wrong drug is administered, the drug
is administered by the wrong route,
8.
List the 7 NRC organizational values
The NRC organizational values are integrity, service, openness, commitment,
cooperation, excellence, and respect.
9.
Define byproduct material in section 11e.
In section 11e, byproduct is defined as “radioactive material (except special nuclear
material) yielded in or made radioactive by exposure to the radiation incident to the
process of producing or using special nuclear material” (NRC, 2023).
10. Byproduct material is regulated by the NRC under what CRF?
Byproduct material is regulated by the NRC under the 10 CFR part 30.
11. What is an Agreement State? (find map)
An Agreement state is one that in agreement with the NRC to allow for the state to have
some regulatory authority to licence and regulate byproduct materials, course materials,
and certin quantities of special nuclear materials.
12. Is Oregon an Agreement state?
According to the “U.S. Agreement State” map, Oregon is an Agreement state.

13. List 4 steps in the process of becoming an Agreement State
Four steps to becoming an agreement state would include the governor and chairman of
the Commision writing a letter of intent, the NRC provides a letter to the state that details
the review team’s comments, the state developing a formal request, and the Commission
approves the agreement.
14-15. Under Part 20- Standards for Protection against Radiation: list the following
a.
Purpose:
a)
Part a under Part 20- Standards for Protection against Radiation states that this
section's regulations set forth requirements for safeguards against ionizing
radiation from operations carried out under licenses granted by the NRC. Which
was issued under the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, as amended, and the Energy
Reorganization Act of 1974, as amended.
b)
The regulations in this part are intended to regulate the receipt, possession, use,
transfer, and disposal of licensed material by any licensee in a way that ensures
the total dose to an individual is within the radiation protection standards outlined
in this part's regulations. This may include doses from radioactive material that is
both licensed and unlicensed, as well as from radiation sources apart from
background radiation.
b.
Define: Annual limit on intake:
The term "annual limit on intake" (ALI) refers to the calculated upper limit for the total
amount of radioactive material that an adult worker can swallow or inhale in a given year.
A lower amount of a specific radionuclide that the reference man would consume in a
year that would give any given organ or tissue a committed effective dose equivalent of 5
rems (0.05 Sv) or a committed dose equivalent of 50 rems (0.5 Sv).
