Mobile data units have influenced the use of data in policing. The use of mobile data units has increased the speed data is shared, the amount of data, the safety of data, and centralization of data for ease of access. Two examples of how mobile data units are used within the criminal justice system are the NCIC and CJIS. The National Crime Infromation Center is an index of missing persons and criminal information that is designed to readily provide information to criminal justice professionals. The information can be accessed through computer systems with tie-ins to the NCIC computer at the FBI headquarters. This system provides a localized place of information that is protected yet can be shared as needed to relevant parties. (National Crime information Center, 1984). The Criminal Justice Information Services is “a compliance standard that regulates data security and privacy in local, state, and federal law enforcement. CJIS collects
and analyzes criminal justice information... But, in order to use CJIS databases, organizations must comply with several security regulations to ensure the proper handling of this sensitive data
(What is CJIS Compliance, 2023).”
